Jack Dorsey is full of shit

Claims to ban political ads and political issue ads. Still allows politicians to promote tweets. The definition of "political issue" is a huge can of worms with unintended consequences like banning Planned Parenthood, Greanpeace, Religious organizations, petroleum companies, green energy companies ... the list goes on, from advertising their views. Of course Twitter will never enforce the rules this way, it would be business and political suicide. They have only though this through as far as a the headline grabbing bullshit that Jack tweeted. Meanwhile Donald Trump's Twitter account is still active and accounts for half the reason Twitter is still in business.

This is actually very true, Twitter’s numbers were terrible before DT started his shitshow. People who worked at Twitter during that time can confirm. Leadership first tried downplaying the DT effect but it was obvious.

Sell all your twitter shares when Trump loses in 2020

Google kill -9 OP Oct 30, 2019

Trump's not going to lose in 2020. I hate Trump, but I will bet some significant money that he's going to win again in 2020. Nothing the Democratic party is doing is even remotely close to moving the needle on the votes of the people who support Trump.

Trump is the bread and butter for twitter but Jack Dorsey is anti-Trump. There is nothing more stupid than this.

Google kill -9 OP Oct 30, 2019

I'm not claiming for a second that Dorsey is like Trump. I'm pointing out the hypocracy of saying no political ads whole their engagement is largely tied to one of the most divisive politicians around.

I don’t understand the underlying argument. Do you believe that we should have freedom of speech in Twitter? If yes, is the issue with the algorithm promoting certain organic content vs other? Isn’t organic a level playing field?

Google kill -9 OP Oct 30, 2019

The underlying argument is that what Dorsey is doing is nothing but PR. They aren't banning political ads if they still allow promoted tweets. Promoted tweets are the bread and butter of political ads on Twitter. And the claim that they are going to ban "issue ads" is easy to say, and impossible to implement. Next time there's a school shooting are they going to ban ads promoting background checks, automatic weapon bans, and magazine size limits?

strategy-and-action hXRi77 Oct 30, 2019

I see. So you don’t equate issue ads with political ads? Or are you saying you don’t know what Twitter is going to do about it? Also I wouldn’t worry about the implementation. There will be lots of citizen watchers

It’s basically a game of margins effected vs returns on the good pr gained. Zuckerberg mentioned today that for FB only 0.5% of revenue is from political ads. I’m guessing for Twitter it’s equal or even less. With such a minimal revenue loss the good pr gained which Twitter needs badly is definitely worth it. There is no way in fucking hell he would have done it if it effected their bottom line in any significant way. Smart move though. Mostly people will definitely see through the bs though.

My pet theory is that Twitter doesn't have the infra or procedures in place to effectively moderate political ads or even achieve compliance given how hard of a time they have with bots and misinformation now. This is just Jack's way of bowing out on a possibly money losing venture on a moral high note.

Twitter crackerja Oct 31, 2019

I highly doubt we do (I’m not in product) but it’s clear Facebook doesn’t either. That’s why you can fake ads from senators and pay in rubles. And I agree that this is about Dorseys fantasy that he’s good for the world. At least Zuck knows he’s an asshole.

Jack Dorsey is the dumbest billionaire of the web giants. He got lucky and rode the wave of many public issues. He’s a joke.

Kamala? is that you OP? "Join me... No?" CNN "it's not going to happen" https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CE9kCsn3wLA

Google kill -9 OP Oct 31, 2019

In not saying Twitter should take down Trump's account (though I found Kamala trying to get Warren to agree on this really entertaining). I generally agree with Zuck on this. Not 100%, he should have said that AOCs proposed lie about voting on the green new deal is unacceptable, because who voted on what is a simple fact - but the kinds of censorship people are asking for on things that you can not really prove as facts is just not going to work.
