They will most probably beat offers from all the top tech companies

Comp might be higher but engineers are treated as second class citizens, they are trader-centric companies, not engineer-centric. Besides, they beat tech companies' comp, but not by a lot, just enough to be competitive, but they will never provide the same growth and prestige a talented engineer usually looks for.

    • People do chase hedge funds. If you only hang out with people chasing Google you're not hanging around with a very ambitious bunch. For the Stanford, Berkeley, MIT types Google is a walk and it's all about Wall St in their circles.

wow, I have no idea that’s the case even though coming from a top 5 CS school - do they chase the quant positions only, or some also do SWE / DataEng stuff and hope to become quant one day?

It's not easy to transition from SWE to Quant. The skills required are vastly different. Quants are usually hired from math / stats / physics PhDs.

Correction: these are top 1 CS schools, not top 5 and no we don’t care that much about hedge funds actually. I got annoyed by the elitism quite quickly. Most of my friends don’t even want to hear about fintech.

Base is always greater in trading firms than in tech companies, even for sde roles. But tech companies have stock, while this type of “unpredictable compensation” is annual bonus in those trading firms. The value of the annual bonus in trading firms will be similar to the sum of vested stock plus performance bonus in tech firms. The tricky part is that the annual bonus can vary a lot - increase if firm is making good profit and decrease if firm is not making enough. If the firm is doing extremely well, the annual bonus can possibly be even higher than your base salary, but it is rare for sde roles.

I have an offer from a trading firm and some of my friends are working in that industry. Based on what I have observed, for 2sigma or Jane street or other trading firms, they basically pay the same as tech companies in TC; but Citadel is sort of the only exceptional one - besides having huge TC, it pays a super large amount of base salary that can go beyond a normal sde’s imagination, so it beats all other companies and becomes "tier -1".

Sde is inferior to quant in those firms, so quant will always get the best perk. But on the other side, quant bears the heaviest workload and sde can be relatively less stressed.

As for life work balance, I used to be an Amazonian geared with pager all the time, so at least for me that is not even a problem. I guess it can be worse than Google though.

This answer is true for certain HFT firms, and incredibly misguided for HFT firms that rely heavily on speed

At some HFT prop shops, the idea that pay or prestige is different between quants and sdes is certainly not correct. Some HFTs would have much less edge and alpha if their execution speeds weren't so ridiculously low.

Swe is about the same. Quant can break 7 figures regardless of experience if you perform.

SWEs work during market hours plus maybe a half hour before and after, so it’s 40 hours per week. Not sure about quants though

How's job stability at Two Sigma compared to Google? Do people get fired more often?

^ Have a few friends who work there. Depends on the team and role. If it was for an engineer role and not a systems engineer/other front office job, I find that surprising to hear.

They’re not the same. The tech is worse. Well, probably not compared to FA but compared to ANG for sure.
