I have recently joined Cisco and have been working on system level programming. To give you a background, I was a data science major in college and when I interviewed with cisco, i thought i would be given a data science profile, but that didn't happen. I want to know how hard is it to make a switch from a system level programming to application software /data Scientist /machine learning profile when you have been labeled as a low level programmer?

Spoiled tech job days are over
Former Cisco engineer here. When I joined as a new grad, I was given the role of technical marketing engineer (sounds crazy right). After two months, I could no longer work in that role and started looking internally and externally. Fortunately, my manager was a nice guy and he arranged interviews with other engineering managers. I made a switch to system software after 6 months, when lot of people were telling you canβt switch before one year. So, I would suggest you start looking internally and externally. Also, talk to manager about in a subtle way that your skills are not the right fit in the current team. Donβt get scared about not being able to find a job. There is a huge demand out there for data science/ML. And there is life after Cisco. I will stop my rant here π
