Joined Google couple of months back. I applied and interviewed for a job using technology X. Got into the team and surprised that I will be working on technology Y. I am not happy with this... told my manager that HR gave me the impression I will be working on X, his response is the immediate need is on technology Y, but X skill is transferrable and will come in handy. HR never informed me that I will be working on technology Y. Since Google’s interview process does not include a hiring manager interview, I never really got to thoroughly ask my future boss what the role and technology will be for in depth. I am a little frustrated and disappointed.
I am in the same situation now at Google. Just rest and vest now until I decide to switch.
noob question! What is rest and vest?
What these guys are doing - basically getting paid and stock vested for just showing up to work.
Well. I wouldn’t say they did you wrong but really any reorg can redefine what you work on. Whether it be 1 day or 1 year on the job. Don’t hear too many people whining when they get moved onto the urgent work - can’t pick your toys- they call it work.
I want to make the best out of my situation an career with Google ... think I can confront my manager about this ?
Why not learn a new technology? Does technology Y suck ? Does the team suck ?
Both .. Plus I know I will be more useful and productive with my years of experience in technology X, which was why HR wanted me in the first place. There is a learning curve with technology Y so basically Im like a fresh grad again and the team isnt that good either
Hmm it seems indeed frustrating. But on the other hand your employer should be able to assign you to the project they have the most needs with. I guess I would try to transfer when feasible and do well until then. After all they do pay you but I agree it’s a bit scummy for them to that unless it was a misunderstanding.
What is X and Y?
There's always a balance between people's needs and business needs. People's needs are always considered under the options the business has to offer. But, when push comes to shove, business needs comes first because it pays everyone's salary. I understand you are feeling bummed out about this, but you can take comfort in 3 things: 1. People change teams every once in a while and you'll probably have other opportunities soon enough. 2. You are working in the most wanted company on the planet (or at least on blind). 3. In a company at this scale you are bound to learn valuable things.
Your career with a given manager or company is like riding a bus. As long as the bus is headed where you want to go, stay on. But don’t be afraid to get off and pick another bus when the direction changes. It expected this will occasionally happen. But it’s not a conspiracy by the bus driver to take you astray, it’s just they have their own goals and it doubtful you’ll convince the bus to change direction just for you, so switch.
