My job applications are getting rejected at resume stage itself. Not getting any calls or phone screens. I showed resume to my friends and every one says it looks good. Not sure what’s going wrong. Can you plz look at it and see if something is wrong? I’m applying for regular software dev positions, backend engineer and ML engineer positions. Tc:120k, 2yoe
Fluffed up resume. You’re counting 2 months as a yoe, it’s barely 2 but you stated 3. Also the job hopping would concern me.
You’re moving around too much + they’re expecting they’ll have to take on Visa costs for you.
Lol! I really need to know if something is wrong with the resjme
You don’t have any dates on your Oracle positions and it’s not clear you’re even still employed there. That’s the main thing to fix. Also no graduation date.
I don't like the layout. It's not very scannable. I would put everything on the education column on a second page. I also dont like coursework and Education separated and the same with programming and tools being separated. Unless you want to teach take off the teaching TA experience. Could use a summary sentence or 2 of what you want/goals.
Is 2 page okay? I thought we should have only one page. Also, would you recommend a single column layout instead of two?
2 page is ok. The 1 page trend is dead. There were a couple of articles about how 2 pages are back recently. Yeah. I would go single column.
OK this resume has a split personality, the experience is on one thing and it seems you're trying get into ML stuff. So neither ML people would hire you because of low experience nor c++/database people because it seems that you're trying to get away from it.
Interesting observation. Didn’t think of it that way. How would you recommend to put it? A separate one for ML and regular jobs?
Also I don't like bolding, used titles for the bullet points.
Most resumes get prescreened by machines before anyone sees them. Is this the layout of the resume or did you rearrange it to display for the question? Machines might have difficulty with nonstandard formats
I too thought this could be the issue. What is a standard format? As a matter of fact, This layout is not something i coded from scratch , but found it on google when I searched for resumes.
Also, It takes far too long skimming just this one page to understand what you do or what your strengths on.
remove the gpa, coursework, teaching and achievement - you’re not in school anymore, doesn’t mean much. when I am looking at resumes, I don’t really care what school you went to and what was in your coursework, unless it’s your first jobs. as others said, combine oracle into one section, too much bold, only bold the company/title, remove the left bar and put skills at the bottom after all your positions. I am also assuming you have your name, email, phone etc at the top and it’s redacted. also, i’ve seen people include a blurb about the position they are looking for at the top.
Thanks for the detailed info. I thought adding blurb was a bad and discontinued practice. (I read it in ctci i guess)
You are overqualified. They don’t want you
I wish
I think the same.
