We are currently in Bay Area, planning to move out soon. One of the places we are considering is around New York and New Jersey area. But we don't have much friends whom we ask. We plan to visit one of the distant cousins but need crowd averages đ. Our concerns are, - Are there descent number of jobs in AI/ML away from NY city? It's difficult to get info on this. - I'm more interested in tech companies, are they really spread out like Bay Area? - We looking to move to an area with 400k-500k homes with descent schools. What are some of the areas that you would recommend? What would be central location for commuting? - How is your commuting there? - Any other things that people moving in should be aware of? Thanks.
Highly recommend that you start with a bay area company and transfer internally with same TC
Yes, I am thinking of on the same lines but would like to see other options.
The tech scene is not as great as Bay, although many tech companies have offices here. But finance, insurance, consulting, and healthcare sectors are very mature, if you are willing to explore those industries. They are investing a lot in ML/AI. Great school districts: Jersey City, Edison, and (maybe) Brooklyn. Commute: NYC and NJ are well connected by subway and path. The suburbs of NJ can be harder to get to, although there's NJ transit. Commutes can be long within the city and the subway during peak hours is crowded, so find a place wisely. Others: Winters can be brutal. So even though the nearest train station can be only 10mins walk, it can seem like the hardest thing to do during the winter months. You won't need a car in NYC but if you plan to stay away from the city, you'd need a car. In that case, look for a covered parking (shoveling ain't fun). It can cost you an additional $250 per month. Welcome to NYC! It's an awesome city to live, great vibe and a perfect amalgamation of different cultures. Food is something to die for.
Thanks that's helpful. Winters is what we not much excited about. But prices are not crazy as the Bay with lot places to visit, things to do it has nice balance.
Winters are not too bad. Wear wool pants and thicker jackets, donât forget layers. I love NYC - lived there for 10 years.
I never get it when people complain about winter in NYC. Very mild in the past couple of years, you can run outdoor most of the time. Maybe because I used to live in Chicago. Upper West Side is very residential and pet friendly. Take 10 minute express train to get to Midtown. Very relaxing living close to Central Park and Riverside Park as well.
Commutes are not fun. Source: Spent some time living in NJ and commuting into NYC.
No idea why you'd move to NYC if you can afford the Bay. Imo the main reason to live in NYC is if you're a single heterosexual male and/or you join a great company whose main presence is in NYC. Except for restaurants, live music and young straight male nightlife, the SF Bay is better in every single respect.
Well the biggest reason is cost of living in Bay. Even though we can afford it right now but it's a constant rat race to get another 20-30k boost in 2-3 years. Plus people who provide services teachers, nurses, and other are moving out, where will that put you few years down the line?
And then you have to compromise with either your desire to travel or saving for retirement or uncertainty.
@HID Global, what do you mean by teachers, nurses moving out? Are they leaving Bay Area because of higher prices? How does that affect you?
Got it! Why arenât you considering Seattle instead?
