I'm excited to join FB Seattle in a month.

Any tips for making the most of boot camp? I'm joining as a generalist backend engineer.

I work in AWS as tech lead. Currently building ML infrastructure, have experience in building scalable distributed systems.

Don’t worry, in Seattle it’s the best, thanks to ex-MS folks

E6 as well, welcome to the company!

WLB is very tricky. Unless you are some sort of genius, I can’t imagine someone been a successful E6 working only 9 to 5.
That been said, is not that bad. I usually work 40-50h per week, but a few times I need to ramp up to 60h. My strategy is to only do that when ACTUALLY matters, and avoid doing it very often.

    • How much time do you spend coding vs doing something else? (Meetings, design docs, researching state of the art, ...) thanks

Finally some useful tips 👍. I'm totally fine with occasional 60hrs, that's not new to Amazonians, but my hope is it doesn't become a norm

Depends on the timing and on the team, but lately I have been spending an awful amount of time writing documents. I hate it, but hopefully is just temporary.

      My “default” ratio is usually 20% design/ 40% coding/ 20% mentoring / 20% meetings

Can you recommend any orgs that work in ML infrastructure area? Or products that have ml scope?

@bootcamp: Some people do make it a norm, but is not required and most of times I would argue is not that effective.
I usually overwork when I’m doing something important that if I delay, other people will get blocked.

FB will evaluate you by impact, not how much work you do, keep that in mind and you will be successful :)

Bay Area. Getting close to PSC and my project is falling behind. At E6, it's not just you. Your project involves lots of XFN teams and you are accountable for success or failure

E6 at fb sea here. Great WLB, don't worry, plenty of great teams around. Your mentor will help with it, don't stress out early :)

Who would be the mentor? Someone who is E6 or above? What's their role?
      May 19
    • Facebook Harumko1
You will be assigned one automatically. Likely e6, but not guaranteed, it doesn't matter much though in bootcamp. Their role is to help you onboard and find the team.

E6 too. WLB isn’t as bad as you’d think it’ll be. You’ll have a painful first 6 months to a year, in which you need to build the infra to be successful at 6 (authority, trust, expertise, relationship with xfn). Expect to work extra hard during that period. If you’re successful at building that infra for yourself, you can start working more normal hrs. Welcome to fb.

I'm also joining FB Seattle soon (a bit later than you are, as I'm taking a few months off to travel), so I'll be watching this thread.

Glad to hear that WLB in Seattle won't be horrific, though I'm also looking forward to a faster pace than my current team at Amazon (doc and process hell).

75 sign on. 200k is what I heard as yearly refreshers.

I’ve heard 100K signons for E5, so you can probably negotiate for more if you care to do so.
