Just accepted a Google low ball

Aug 2 93 Comments

Fresh PhD (6 months of exp) got an offer with
140k base
150k/4 stock
25k sign up bonus

Bay area L4

It seems that a number of phds are getting these types of offers based on levelsfyi...

Feel bad and happy, happy to go to Google but bitter about the TC, I feel demotivated already 😔

I'm thinking about my next jump already

Be grateful to get 200k+ TC with only 6 months experience..you probably should have gotten less

A security PhD? Is that even a thing? When I worked at Apple, the best and smartest security experts where former high-school script kiddies who hadn’t even gone to college.

PhD gets counted as ~3yrs work ex. Don't listen to the idiots here telling you to be grateful for a lowball offer. You were lowballed.

    • Yeah I heard in another thread of 300k PhD offers but it was for Research Scientist.

You still only have 6 months experience. If it was that bad, you wouldn't have taken it. You have to start somewhere, so forget it and move on.

      Maybe my expectations were unrealistic?

Probably, I expected to be given the earth when I started. You go through education with top grades, pass everything and expect top results, that isn't real life always. Also, there are people with 10 yoe on you, what do you think is higher value (assuming you aren't working in a research team which specializes in your field).

The job actually relates to my area. if there is a good meritocracy at Google I've confidence that I'll nail it but I just want to pass this initial disappointment

      Aug 3
  • Ok I have a theory.

Since tech salaries have jumped like crazy in the past 7-8 years, lots of folks decided to pursue this lucrative career path.

So now, we have an influx of fresh grads of all educational levels. All competing for a limited number of entry-level jobs.

You’re the second person to post recently with a PhD who got lowballed by Google. Recent or fresh grad. So, probably not a coincidence I think.

    • OP
What I mean I might move regardless, in a year or so, even if I get promoted.. Because probably the TC jump will be higher than internal promotion

Plus it's kinda screw you to them, I know how much it costs to hire someone
      Aug 3
    • It’s true, you could and a lot of people do leave after 1 year.

But...Google is a nice place to work and...you might’ve just drank the Kool-Aid by then. Great WLB, benefits, amenities, smart colleagues, all that stuff.

I think that’s another reason why G is currently low-balling slightly. It’s because of the chill atmosphere (as opposed to, for example, Facebook).

It’s also a supply and demand situation. If they don’t have headcount for L3 and L4 why pay extra for them?

PhD or not end of the day your just a code monkey for them. Slog it out like the 70k other Google insects working there or join a smaller company that truly values your skills.

Totally New Here, but I will say, I generally always low-ball the initial offer, esp if they didn't name their expectation of salary upfront.
Most have said solid responses - I feel the only lacking is the negotiation, you don't have to accept you can always ask for more and say why you were worth it.
Since you already accepted that's not an option anymore.
My advice honestly is outperform everyone around you, take the extra work, make sure your scrum manager/ management knows your name - generally offering help and solving problems for them.
I have given out raises after first 60-90days if they have proven value and budget shows I can.

But i also know/hear about how pay can really be messed up and not correlate to your value, just because they could pay you less they pay you less

It's a business a dollar saved is a dollar earned. On the other side of that, if you are worth paying more and can explain why and know how to ask for it, I'll give you everything I can to ensure you are happy and making me more moneym

This is not a lowball at all. You have less than a year of professional experience. Experience is much more valuable than education. Sorry bro.
    Aug 3 4
    • OP
Well I had three internships where I worked with people with around 5-7 years of exp and I defentily knew more in the field than many of them, I effectively finished a 4 month (intern) job in 4 weeks. So yoe isn't the full picture..
Plus at my current startup job I'm doing very well too, as productive as their senior engineers, many of experienced people actually don't want to get their hands dirty.

A quick search on Blind will let you know that Google low balls unless you have a competing offer. Did you have competing offers? Your own fault for not negotiating Google offer.

Your only other option is to suck it up for 1-2 yrs, go to another FAANG for more pay and then boomerang back to Google for the pay you want. I’m doing this with Microsoft. Accepted job at Google and will consider boomerang back in a few years.

With the impending downfall in the markets and economy, a lot of these PhDs and especially data scientists will be bee-lining back to the univ. the TC inflation is correlated with cheap money, juiced up economy, low unemployment levels thanks to the Fed. Enjoy while the going is good - won’t last long. And do make sure y’all are saving for the rainy day - or the coming hurricane.

I don't have exact stats. You could reasonably aim for 2-3 years, but some people have found it frustratingly hard to get a promo. If you're familiar with the process you could probably imagine why.
Best case maybe 1-1.5 years!? I'm just guessing ramp up + time to contribute in a meaningful way.
