I find it amusing. We can choose to be 20 individual ones and 'respect' each other, or stand with each other and make 11111111111111111111. (From telugu poetry) Which is stronger and greater? World is so splintered, this whole 'offensive' thing will damage the world more than it helps.
I guess that is meant as a joke but people at work have stopped me mid sentence to correct for these idiotic things. It’s as childish as freedom fries
Mandatory
Peopledatory XD
Per'son', go figure!
Per'child'. There you go.
“Child” implies pro-creation was involved. That’s trans & homophobic!!!
Politics aside that thumbnail is comedy gold
Fox hires actors to entertain.
I love shopping at Goldman Sachs though
It’s Goldperson Genitals. Stay woke
Wow I didn’t realize people like this exist. Language changes for sure but it can retain a history. That is why we have etymology. Mort in mortgage means death. Should we change the word because it no longer requires death. People get offended when “guys” is used. But it has been used to mean people for a long time. The word “man” had multiple senses. One of which is “human” as in “is she man or monkey?” I am oriental. There is nothing wrong with using oriental. There is no good replacement. Asians = orientals and indian and some russians and tibetians etc. Just like mortgage, we can say mailman and have an etymology as “at one point mail delivery was mostly done by men”. Or better yet, have mailman and mailwoman. Word etymologies don’t need to be accurate in the present time. They have never been. Why should they be now? It is ludicrous to replace man everywhere.... and sometimes incorrectly. Manual, manhattan, manufacture, manipulate, manage, .... The bigotry is to assume bigotry when it’s not there to begin with. Congressman and congresswoman are legit words. Western languages encode gender into nouns. We can try to change it, but that is going against the tide. Language is a form of communication. Convenience is a factor. I would much rather say policeman, policewoman to refer to the specific person. Police officer is too long and inconvenient.
You are criticizing every western language. You are entitled to your opinion but the majority of western people disagree with you. The words he and she encode gender. Mama, papa, etc. Albeit it is much less cumbersome and more convenient now than it was. Agricola (latin for farmer) is feminine. Most farmers were not female. “Bona agricola” not “bonus agricola”. Gender here is incorrectly encoded. You may say that is why it’s a dead language but a lot of these carry forward in time. Why do you say “he went to work” when referring to a male person? It is convenient. This isn’t the case in other languages. Imagine having to say “the male person went to work”. You convey the same information, but more cumbersome. “Seems weird to keep what’s in a person’s underwear...” And this is bigotry to me. Weird for whom? To think that yours is the only way to think is bigotry. Here is something to think about: https://www.theguardian.com/notesandqueries/query/0,5753,-15935,00.html “I got a new ship. Let’s take her for a spin.” I guess that will drive some angry feminists crazy? I believe in equality for women. I don’t believe that women can do no wrong.
Except that it doesn’t convey the same information. “Jon came home yesterday, and today they went to work” “Jon came home yesterday, and today Jon went to work” Do those sentences sound right to you?
