L3 for 5 years of experience

I have just more than 5 years of experience at Microsoft and got L3 offer from Google. Is it worth it to accept it? Is level even negotiable or Google HC just fixes it for you? Current level: 62.

I don't see it as insult. If you think you deserve l4, try again ... unfortunatel, years of experience doesn't mean much in tech industry ..

2 years at Apple and 4 years at my previous employer (very well reputed company).
Total compensation in the offer is almost the same that I make at Apple, so not really excited about the offer.

If the total comp is good from where you are - do not look at levels. You'll get promoted within 1-1.5 year and get even higher comp ;)

Yeah, 1 year if you are great, 1.5 if you're good...

L3 to L4 is the easiest promo at Google. It's doable within 1 year especially for people with experience.

I was 62 at Microsoft with 6 years of experience and got l3 offer. I've then seen lots of ex-microsofties in the same boat. After much consideration I took the offer. Got promoted to L4 in 6 months.

6 months is not realistic, less than 0.5% get promoted in that tenure... I would not count on this. Average is 1.5 years

You have to remember the average is skewed due to fresh grads. With industry experience, expect a promo to L4 within 6 months.

Not seen a single industry hire move from l3 to l4 in 6 months, sample size about 25

The published average is 2 years, so 1.5 for industry would be average is my guess

6 months will be incredibly hard. 1 year is very doable.

Agree, it's hard. I was lucky that the TL of the critical project left and I lifted up the project and delivered before they could find a suitable replacement.

No it won't work. Google's level calibration sometimes could be insulting but their package range is wide.

Google doesn’t respect external experience, and even internal tenure is a very, very small factor in promo, this is different from MS where tenure is taken into consideration in leveling for good or for bad.

I got downgraded too l63 -> l4. I still made the jump due to total comp. I know a friend that had also around 5 years of exp that switched to l3. He is now l4 after one year.

Dude, 63 to l4 is not a downgrade.

If your total comp went up, how is it a downgrade? Levels mean nothing, money does.

Interested In how did you convince yourself that a L4 was justified. Did you focus on comp or were there other factors too that influenced your decision?

TC was not bad, although I could get 50k more with l5 and if i had another competitive offer. However I had to wait for that one more year and was already bored with startup and preparation. It is so much waste for algorithms preparation (was amazing at the University 12 years ago, forgot EVERYTHING:) Decided to try Google and see how it will end up. Anyway I can try Facebook in a year and get sign in bonus to justify me accepting lower offer at l4

I have team mates getting L4 as level 64 with 10 years of experience.

Google down level people very often but the comp is competitive enough for people to jump.

I think if you are getting paid much more than what you got right now, just jump. You will get promoted soon to L4.

In google getting to L5 is hard, so regardless of whether you are getting 3 or 4, it probably won’t affect when you will be in L5.

It's not worth it. Do not take it. You can retry for L4 in 6 months (check with your recruiter to be sure). I know a guy who had 1 year exp, got L3 offer from G, rejected, went to MS for 6 months, re-interviewed to G again, got L4 offer (with basically 1.5 years exp).

Actually, I searched for other threads on this. For some reason, I thought I heard about people negotiating a level increase, but it looks like the answer is a firm no.

You may have to interview again to get a better level.

If comp is >=1.5 times, then go for it..otherwise, try again for l4...

I hear a PhD buys you one level at Google. Not a masters, but a PhD from a respectable institution.

If you have another offer, anything but vacation is negotiable.
EDIT: and level, apparently. If L3 is too low (I think it is), I would interview again in a year if I saw Google as the place to be (I don’t)
