Sharing my offers from 4 tech companies, after some negotiation. Offers are final.

FB: Base $185k, bonus 15%, equity $500k, sign on $100k
Lyft: 205, 0%, 700, 55
Snap: 180, ?%, 750, 40 (in stock)
Dropbox: 185, 15%, 400, 15

Equity is for 4 years.

EDIT: I had strong referrals for FB, Dropbox and Lyft.
5 years experience.

FB equity looks low. If they can increase to $700k, go with FB.

Those Snap v1 glasses are horrible and they wrote off unsold stock. Now they laid off bunch of people and released v2. Did anyone see those glasses used by anyone? I never saw those glasses in the Bay Area.

@thesunrise, I'm curious, if you could buy Lyft stock today for $0.01 would you buy some? (I would for sure), what about $1, $5, $10, etc. Not everyone is going to agree on the value OP should attribute to illiquid stock, but if there is any price that you would pay to get some stocks then the value is not 0. So for me the value is definitely not 0

Just because it's illiquid or comes with risk doesn't mean it doesn't have value.

The question is not whether or not I could sell it, it's indeed would you buy it for a given price (knowing you have to wait for IPO to sell it). Because once you buy it or once you get it from your company you have exactly the same thing. If you were willing to pay $X to get it then what the company gave you is worth $X as well. Maybe X is 0 for you, but it's definitely not 0 for me.

With so many lay off news in the engineering org, how could you justify someone with such great offers joining snap?
      May 4, 2018

Don't forget transition costs; to take a snap offer you pretty much have to move to LA. Maybe you have to find a new apartment in a hurry and it's not a great deal, maybe you have to get out of your current lease, you have to move all your crap. Later if things go wrong, there's no jobs down there so you have to do all the above in reverse?

From the outside, I think snap needs to take these intangible costs into account while making offers. They probably think their equity is worth more than I do, and they probably think that their offers are already good enough to handle intangibles.

I got an offer from FB too early, and only had Lyft to give them, which is pre IPO. By the time Snap gave me an offer, FB had already told me their offer is final. FB updated their offer once. Take away: actively synchronize the recruiters from different companies so your offers all come at the same time.

Tip: you can also delay talking about numbers until you're done interviewing. I had a 2-3 week gap between all my offers (verbal given but no numbers) but pushed off talking about numbers until I was done with interviews. Then I negotiated them all at the same time

In my case they've usually verbally given me an offer first and then asked me about numbers or a chance to talk on the phone. I just say I'd like to finish up with other interviews and they've been fine with that.

Negotiate with Facebook to increase equity to 600-700, then take it. Lyft does not have refresher. Snap won’t exist for 4 years. Dropbox, as much as I like their culture, their offer is too low.

      May 21, 2018
  • Snapchat iasB74
You have solid offers so let’s break it down.

    1) Sign on is irrelevant - it’s one tile comp which you’ll have to repay if you bounce early. At these rates it won’t matter long term. If you’re in it for 45-85k you’re prioritizing the wrong thing.

    2) you have to consider the class of equity. FB is solid and growing. $500k is $500k +15% yoy minimum (conservative). You need to discount pre-ipo by 50% which is what FANG comp departments do. So Lyft = 350. You also have to discount new IPO. There’s >10yr precedent that IPOs dip before popping (if they do at all) since FB. You see it with Snap, $10 vs $17 IPO. Dropbox is doing well so far but not past their first quarter. So discount both of those IPO stocks accordingly.

      That’s not what “conservative” means…
      May 3, 2018
    • Snapchat iasB74
No idea what you’re saying Noogler. What part of conservative growth projection do you not get? tech companies use 15% yoy as a baseline on stock growth given that most of them far eclipse that. Go back and find out how often FANG+ has missed that target. The issue stock, especially refreshers, targeting projected growth to minimize their dilution exposure.
      May 3, 2018
    • Google Noogler69
You just cherry picked the best performing tech stocks over the past few years and made an assumption that they will all continue to do that well for several more years. Many, many tech stocks have not done that well.

Both have high upside but volatile lows. I think 50% keeps you safe. Snap is close to bottom so what you see is what you get IMO. But Dropbox is still priced for perfection so if wait for first earnings, and if you can’t you’re gambling up or down.

    3) Based on all of these numbers, the logical bet is FB which has a higher normalized total comp plus solid bonus which they’ve paid at 100% 9/10 years. It’s stable but capped on the upside. Otherwise you’re gambling in 3 directions. Lyft if you think IPO future is gold (highest risk), Snap if you think they’re rock bottom and rising (medium risk), Dropbox if you think they’re IPO steady and climbing (lower risk).
