L6 -> L7

I have been here 3 almost 4 years - hired in as L6 and back in the day ranked TT when used and past year a very good review.... what ever leveling that means now...

What I’m struggling with is how in the hell to get to L7. Seems to be the glass ceiling impossible to break. Is it more the politics verses contributions? Or do I need to have more than a year managing other line managers?? Just frustrated.

    Take 'Empire Building 101', and find a manager who is a professor of this course.

    Why do you care about promotion (not being snarky, curious)

      I have a bias for action and ownership in my career..... (God that does sound koolaid-ish) I want to do better than just TT at a 6. I want to grow further.

      I ask because I sometimes have found that the more I focus on promotion specifically, the more it eludes me. I do best when I’m so immersed in delivering I have no mental bandwidth to worry about that. So maybe stop defining career success as level and title...

      The first and most important thing is to find a space where you seriously kick ass and where you can deliver real value and, yes, embody the leadership principles. I think making sure the layers above you are aware of your desire to advance and of your wins... and start building a plan with them about how to get there. Start asking for feedback from leaders and act on their suggestions so nobody has reason not to promote.

      But in the meantime, consider if it should really worry you this much. 😉

    Amazon usually hires principals from outside the company, very few senior become principal internally. Also, on a related note: https://sites.google.com/site/thefaceofamazon/

      I’m not looking to grab my torch and pitchfork. My team treats me well - my stocks and salary is decent. I just feel trapped at 6 with no clear path to 7

      Resistance increases everywhere as you move up.

    Similar situation . One part of my brain says I am close and I should just prove to myself that I can get it. Other part says - WTF -find something else . Don’t know how to move forward

    Dude, it is possible, but very hard. The most important factor is having a great manager. Second is your tenure in amzn. If you stay 10 years and know all the systems, in the end they will get too embarrassed not to promote you. Otherwise your best bet is really to hop jobs with promos on each hop.

    Happened to me as well. Unless there is a rare opportunity that you know of its almost impossible to move up. One way to do this is move groups. But I just moved out as a Principal.
