What does FB/Goog looks for when evaluating a candidate for L6 ? Is it yoe ?
Nobody cares about years of experience.
But YoE can be a starting point for evaluation. Let’s say you get a resume which list only 2 YoE. Highly unlikely that person has the relevant skills to get hired at L6. On the other hand, having 8 or more YoE does not guarantee to be hired at L6/L5. What would be interesting to know is the average experience level for folks who got promoted to L6.
Most reliable signal is If you are at similar level in comparable company.
If you are missleveled as a 6 at FB you’ll be managed out within the year, so you don’t want that. Just be honest, answer the questions you are asked and let the interviewers decide if you would succeed as a 6. Do not try to prepare for what you think we are trying to hear
L6 at fb will be the kind of person tech leading half a dozen engineers day to day Or someone who has some ridiculous ic contributions where they can show concrete examples of them moving the needle consistently. For example consistently finding ways to increase revenue 1% every year. I think getting hired at e6 you’ll have to somehow show you can do the first one but describing a similar track record
Lol @ YOE. At L6+, it's consistent impact through *other* engineers. Whether they realize it or not. Do this consistently over many years/project with org/company level impact.
how do you prove consistent impact and perf? i could very well lie on resume that I leaded team and delivered. i can lookup all blogs on scalablity and feed intervieer with fancy terms
That’s why they need to interview you. Some people actually can get away with that but most fail
