Is this for real? She was a senior manager (L6 with only a few teams), from what I hear ‘not a strong performer’ and now is a L8 ( director) at G... is that common, or an outlier?
One time my undergrad professor said of a classmate, "How did he get into Harvard? He got a (B) in my course!"
will you also consider a possibility that maybe uber talent bar is higher?
Why do you care? Mind your own career instead of being jealous of others.
I m guessing she has become manager or indirect leader for the person who put the question..
Senior managers at Uber are like directors at other companies. Director is just one level above senior manager, not two. (Numerical level doesn’t matter, could be different between companies)
Director has visibility into org budgets though, while managers don't
But Director at Google is a big jump. It's not like Microsoft.
The external hiring bar for L8 is out of whack in Cloud as compared to internal promotion bar. This is really obvious and a big problem. We're losing many talented L7s because of this and others are getting large retention grants. Urs could fix this but inexplicably has not.
Cloud has inhaled a bunch of Amazon folks who were brought in at surprisingly higher levels. What gives?
kind of interesting the choice of word surprisingly, given the fact amzn has been doing a surprisingly great job on cloud, from that angle they joined Google is more of downgrade.
She is not the only one. NSK also went from L6 at Uber to L8 at google.
An L6 manager at Uber is one level below director (L7) A one level move up to director is not uncommon. While being a woman of color would have helped, she is very capable of doing that job. Also remember till recently and in many cases even now, L5b at Uber maps to L6 at F/G. So if she came in at L6 she was hired in as an L7 equivalent in F/G.
That’s actually great to hear. I wasn’t calling out that her being a woman made it easy/ or that she didn’t deserve it - her performance/perception of performance at Uber doesn’t necessarily define her new job title, I was just surprised to see L6 manager at Uber can actually be considered comparable to L8 director at G. It gives me hope that our leveling is actually robust! I was just clarifying it’s not an aberration, but possible ( even expected!)
Stop being misleading. L6 at Uber is higher than L6 at google. We have 5b level. You need to be clearer on that. Like others said, she is one level below director so only one level jump. Not a big deal. People usually jump level at management while switch.
Female perks? I've seen stories where they put someone in a position to keep a ratio
I've seen enough men in positions they don't belong. What perk is that?
Well at morgan, there is so much proud in having a female in a given position that they often get it even tho a better candidate was available. I am not saying all women are bad nor all men are good. I have just witnessed it a few times
