Google: cloud org

Bonus: 20% target
Rsu: 950k (monthly vest for 4yrs)

Facebook: data infra
Base: 220k
Bonus 20% target
Rsu: 920k (no cliff, 4yrs vesting)

Both bay area (Sunnyvale & Menlo park). 14 yoe.

Both companies have said the offer is "final", not willing to budge further. Both are close enough any way. Have couple other offers in hand but I'm considering only these 2.

Which one should I take?

20 votes for Google, 4 for FB so far. Answer seems obvious!

P.S. that's an amazing comp, congrats!

Also using the same argument, if LinkedIn data shows more people go G -> F, is that normalized to company sizes? I don't think so

    • Facebook SFab53
I’m normalizing for company size in that calc

Thanks, this was a useful conversation. But honestly I don't trust any of these "best places" articles. Both seem like good companies to work for, it may come down to persons preference I guess.

Xoogler here. Don’t drink the koolaid. FB is leaps and bounds better environment but you do need to pick a good team. Google is too big and too many chill people who are not pushing themselves enough and think clearing the bar is all they have to do. If you don’t want to keep growing, go Google of course.

Regarding interview: it was total 6 on-site interviews. 3 focused on coding, 2 on design and 1 behavioral.

For design I didn't have to prepare too much since I've worked in distributed systems for most of my 14+ years career and have a good intuition for design. Nevertheless I used "cracking the system design interview" course to get some structure so I can get the right things covered in 45 minutes.

Coding, there is no escaping leetcode imo. I got mostly medium-high difficulty questions, 1 interviewer asked 2 questions, the rest asked 1 and then spent time in follow up questions on the same problem.

Behavioral was the usual what-ifs questions on resolving conflict on technical decision, giving feedback to a colleague not doing well, mentoring etc.

Congrats on great offers! 13yoe, got similar offer (bit less) for L5 Last year. Realized later should have requested for L6 interviews.
Been at Facebook too before. For your offers, comp/level being almost same - choose FB if you like chaos environment, choose Google if you like more laid back and organized culture.
Not going to be easy on either to get promoted to L7, focus on trying to shine at L6.
All the best, and don't worry - between the two, it's not going to be bad decision any way you choose!

Google cloud will depend on which team. New teams that were built from the ground up are probably more chaotic than legacy teams that came from and are still partially technical infrastructure/core services.

Facebook and Google are very similar. Facebook is more like a young Google, in mind/body/practices. Same general culture though. Some things are basically parallel universe versions of Google, built by ex-Googlers. Some things are behind Google in terms of robust engineering infra and Dev tools. That being said, Googlers are notorious for over complicating, and sometimes over engineering, things. Sometimes it's warranted, more often it feels like not.

      Both are great places. Congrats.

Expect C++ at G. It'll take sometime to adjust from Java to C++, but I'm ok with that

    • LinkedIn chandu .
      OP
TC at LinkedIn doesn't matter. I'm nearing my 4 year cliff, and manager is giving me less refreshers to "save for" my promo time!! So my TC today is low and not comparable.

    Good offers. Congratulations!

Ask for $225K base and $1M RSU from both. Pick G.

Are you in storage or networking infra?

Those offer r final, I'm quite sure they won't budge further. It'd be nice to have an extra 50k rsu, but I don't think it'll happen in my case. After lots of back and forth they've both told it's their final offer.

I'm in neither, my team is kubernetes (don't think it falls in storage org).

What do you mean by “no cliff”?
    May 2 5
    • Google bogleheads
Some companies have 1 year cliff for vesting, i.e. your first vest happens after one year. That doesn't happen with Facebook and Google where you start vesting every month or quarter after you join
      May 2
    • Qualcomm NqAf57
Is that special for L6 or just a Google thing?
      May 2
    • Google bogleheads
It's for all. Monthly vesting if your Grant was over certain number of share units, otherwise quarterly. Either way no cliff

Not sure what you mean, but neither companies generally give number of shares in offer but just dollar amount. The share conversion happens in grant price after join date.

I am a neutral person and Google is the no brainer choice here. Even if FB was 10% higher I would still choose google for the amazing WLB
    May 2 3
    • Facebook SFab53
Wlb varies by team. I know this first hand at goog.
      May 2
    • Google bogleheads
That I can confirm. Some teams can have great while some can have bad wlb at G
      May 2
    • Google bogleheads
Although I'll say that bad wlb is still relatively rare at G. Op is going to cloud which tends to have worse wlb in more teams though

I’d opt for FB. I don’t understand enterprise and I reckon GC is all Enterprise. I do feel there is growth opportunity in GC strategically.

However, I personally selected FB because it’s consumer facing with two of my favorite apps — Instagram and WhatsApp.

Nevertheless, congratulations. If you got the interest, it’d be nice if you to share some good tech resources. From your experience and offer it appears you aren’t a LeetCode monkey.

I think some insights on how to expand our knowledge will help the community.

    Atb for your endeavors.

At this high level I'd recommend Google over Facebook since further promotion is going to be equally hard no matter where you go.

Google is more relaxed and you can take your time to ramp up and show impact, at Facebook you will be thrown on a full speed tread mill from day one. For that reason some E6s have a hard time gelling in at Facebook.

    • Cisco fesK86
Most E6s are built like this though.. they don’t wanna chill with scrubs they keep wanting to push the pace.. FB seems like his personality would mesh better than dealing with the BS at G
