L61/L62 to L6 at Amazon

Have been recently promoted to 62. Interviewed at Amazon and negotiating for L6. In the negotiation, I told the recruiter that I've been 62 for the last 2 years and am awaiting 63. So, kinda convinced that L6(comparable to 63) is the right level. Recruiter verbally agreed that L6 is possible.

Now I'm worried about Amazon doing a background check on the level duration.

Does Microsoft reveal the time in a particular level?

YOE: 7+
TC : 180 :(

Go tiger ! Remember you can even get L7 , but you will get so much stressed and your expectations will be so high, that you will get fired in 3 months - it’s always good to go at a level you will succeed and establish yourself - gives you time to win. So never lie , because it’s good for short term , not good for long term

L6 possible but not to be expected from 62 or 63. Both normally map to L5. Will depend on interview performance

L6 responsibilities can really be taxing at Amazon, and if someone is not prepared for it, it can cause severe burns!

    ...Just a heads up

I think it's also better to find more details around L6 expectations, and make sure you're meeting or exceeding the expectations already.

I suspect you’re just one of those pricks which are sure that world revolves only because they personally made sure it will.

It may surprise you but the L5 next to you is equally capable of writing a six-pager or representing a team on a meeting.

      :-)

Freaking out is definitely not one of the leadership principles!

I was just saying in all the teams I saw, L6 expectations are way higher than L5.

      Chill my friend.

I mean not in terms of being able to write a six pager - but what happens to you if your decision was wrong

Nothing in particular will happen. You’ll write a COE and be commended for not screwing up even more being vocally self-critical all the way. Amazon way :)

As someone who worked in both companies for 3 years, let me tell you one thing: at this point of time, you won’t get hired as L6, period.

There’s no way they hire 62 as L6. Recruiters just try to get you to interview first, doesn’t hurt.

Even if you get in as L6, you’d be piped after 6months simply because L6 works on a much larger scope than 62. We are talking about a 7 YOE 62 so let’s not kid ourselves that you’re some naturally gifted rockstar who just can perform on the next level overnight.

That said, I’d still join because you will have higher TC as L5 and Amazon is a better place to learn and grow (unless you just want to rest and vest)

Just FYI, I joined as L6 earlier this year from L62 at Msft. Yes, responsibilities are way higher and there is a lot of ownership, which means any crucial decision in your area is pretty much your responsibility. It is not a cakewalk but it is manageable as long as you are aware what you are getting into. Good luck!

@Tolstoy you are L6 PM (or any non-SDE)? L6 SDE is a totally different idea from L6 PM/TPMs. I’ve seen MBA interns return as full-time already at L6 PMs. L6 SDE is ridiculously hard within Amazon, and nearly impossible as an industry hire.

I find this post comical and out-of-touch. I interviewed with Amazon for an SDE 3 role with 20 years of relevant engineering experience. I could not have done better that day (maybe on some of the LPs, but not the tech). I was leveled as an SDE 2. Now that I’m there, I can see why. You’ll only get an SDE 3 offer if you’re already working at that level (in your sleep) at another major player (I was not at a big tech). Your TC clearly gives away that you are not. Please update us, but my guess is that you’ll be staying at MS.

The recruiter pretty much has no say on which level you'll come in as. During the interview, you'll meet with a bar raiser and he or she will decide whether or not you meet the L6 bar. If not, they may consider you for L5 depending on whether or not the team you’re interviewing for has L5 positions available.

L6 is a significant jump in responsibility from a 62-63. Pay and scope map to principal level at MS.

If you are negotiating on 250K then don’t burn out at L6 , negotiate on package and let them decide the level so you have opportunity to grow.

Doesn't really matter... Do the interview, and they'll calling accordingly. The L6 , is just so the loop is ready in case you're at that level
