Laid off - How to Address in Resume + Interview

So I am one of the folks affected at the Avvo acquisition by Internet Brands (so I was laid off and not fired). I am non-tech.

Curious what recommendations everyone has (especially recruiting folks) in terms of handling a layoffs and applying for new jobs.

Given the whole Uber situation in the news (Amazon exec got their offer withdrawn because they left Amazon at the end of 2017 and didn't disclose) I don't want to mess it up.

(1) Should I update my resume (and maybe LinkedIn) to say I worked until March '18?

(2) I am currently interviewing with a company I applied while I was employed, when should I bring up being laid off? It will show up in the background check (if I pass the interviews) and don't want to appear misleading.

(3) How about with future interviews if this falls thru? How and when do I bring up being laid off?

I got acquired by IB in 2008, it was the worst, lasted a year. Good job dodging that!

    Sure update LinkedIn.

Be up front and honest with future employers, call it a career break, sabbatical or whatever you fancy. Just make clear that it was a whole department that was made redundant and not just you.

For your current role just let them know during the interview stage if it comes up. Maybe talk to the recruiter.

Yep, be honest. In some ways it could make you more attractive since the recruiter will know that you are serious about finding a new job.

Being laid off due to anything but performance is not your fault. There is nothing wrong with that

Lay offs (when they are an entire department) really aren’t that big of a deal. Just be honest. Update your resume using the last date of your employment, and when the recruiter asks when you’re searching for a new job, say “you probably saw XYZ company just went through a reduction in force and my department was included.”
