Canadian, laid off around a month ago. Health coverage expires today, but I plan on staying in the Bay Area to apply for jobs. I also need coverage not only for unemployment period but also the month that my visa needs to be processed. This country's health care system confuses me and am wondering a few things: 1. Do I need health insurance, or can I just buy travel insurance in lieu of if I just need the basics covered 2. Should I go through a third party or just pick COBRA? 3. PPO vs HMO? And if so, which provider? Was on a Blue Shield PPO Plus plan before - COBRA would be roughly $500/month out of pocket while third parties seem to be around $350/month. TC $130k

Uber does layoffs?
research COBRA rules. Essentially, you don't have to pay for it unless you need it. If you don't end up needing it, you just got free healthcare coverage for however many months. If you do, just pay the premium and copay.
