I'm thinking about really investing in learning Mandarin for better career prospects. Is this a dumb idea? I have a couple of friends who work in Finance in Asia and it seems like to be marketable you need to speak Mandarin...I think learning Mandarin is the future...Am I wrong or is it just too late...I hope to one day work abroad...

- PwC bobagirlWhy don’t you learn a coding language? 10 time easier than Mandarin and could be more useful in the long run. Unless you are seriously considering moving to Asia, learning Mandarin is not as rewarding as you think
- Boom Technology DrtU65Mandarin is great and is the primary language of mainland China. Finance is in Hong Kong, and they speak Cantonese. I would learn mandarin because it has broader reach, but it’s not going to help if you’re strictly in finance - in HK. SHANGHAI most speak shanghainese/mandarin though.

You will be able to feel different “thinking formulas” while switching among different languages. Also it helps you understand different cultures. I don’t think it’s a waste of time. I think it’s a wise choice and totally worth to invest in.
