How is the tech/culture/opportunity for growth at PRU?
Tech- when I started many years ago, the technology was laughably, embarrassingly bad. (Lotus Notes anyone?) I’m not in SDE so I can’t speak too much to the full tech stack. It’s hardly a shining beacon of technological wonder nowadays, but things are improving all the time. Progress is very, very slow and access to many modern tools (say Slack for instance) is blocked. Opportunity for growth CAN be good, depending on your team, physical location, and role. The company pays constant lip service in terms of being supportive of stretch opportunities with other teams, but at least it’s supported from the top, regardless of how your department and manager feels. The company is slowly, but increasingly open to remote employees even for new hires (again, depends on team), but it’s mostly for people that have been here and proven themselves valuable. There are some teams that simply will not entertain the thought of someone not physically in the office. Culture- varies greatly. Most of it is what you would expect; risk-averse insurance, and conservative, boring uninspiring workspaces with people afraid to take risks and make tough decisions, lest it be seen as failure. However, there are parts of the company, many of them new teams without all the “legacy” culture and baggage, that are on new, open floor plans with flexible workspaces and technology, coming to work in jeans and T-shirt’s. That’s very much the exception to the rule. It’s a respected, very solid company to stay and grow with depending on your profession, if you keep an eye on your career path and jump to another role/team/business unit at the right time. On the other hand, it’s also the type of place that people stay at for EVER and settle in to safe, boring obscurity.
