No way. The company's valuation would have to grow by a huge amount just to break even with your current TC, let alone to exceed it

Those are some dinky ass options. Negotiate for a lot more or tell them GTFO.

Are you getting 20k dollars worth options or 20k options in the company?

Since you don't know how much each unit is worth it makes sense to put a $0 price tag on it

Go to the startup if you want to have a lot of responsibility and impact and be in a fast paced environment. Also, if you want to do your own startup and build community in the startup world it’s the best way to do it.

    Estimate value of options?

As of now little but this is where it’s tough...the idea of “it could be worth xxx”

Could absolutely be financially worth it. I had a similar offer that turned into 600k TC at IPO.

Evaluate their ability to IPO and dominate their market. See if the work sounds interesting. Most importantly, feel out their work culture if you plan to stick around for any significant time.

I walked away from that huge TC because the culture and people were just not worth it.

Thanks. Good point about work, culture and people. I like the people ... a lot. Some of them I knew from past.

Deciding about going to a startup can never be about the money. Would you be willing to work there for free because you love the concept and the founders and know they will be successful? Then yes. If not, they will probably fail, or it’s not a good fit for you.

Are you going to be stoked to go into work every day?

Can you leverage your experience to become invaluable at this startup and move up quickly / negotiate for more?

Yes to both but it’s hard to balance money now vs later when I’ve no clue what these options will be worth

You can think of them saying “we’re looking at the shares being worth $X in a few years” as an upper bound. What’s the strike price?

Also see if they are solving problems that , if they are successful, would expand a market or create new market. Startups solving incremental problems go no where, at least in financial terms. Recent IPO show a pattern
