I am L60 at Microsoft (SDE1) and have a TC of $155k and have 4 months of experience. I got an SDE2 offer from Uber (TC $220k). Would it be advisable to leave Microsoft this early for the jump in position and comp?
Yes - definitely
Uber under layoffs.
Hell yea. Career progression is generally slower at MS so this is a good move. Congrats!
Raises at Microsoft are limited (unless you get SSA) even if you stayed. Very clear answer to this, go to Uber. And you'll get a free promo.
This is a no brainer
Have patience , don't rush for TC
Costs are increasing year on year but wages aren’t.
It's balance between always going for better comp versus short stints becoming a negative signal for future emoyment. I personally would not switch before 1 year, preferably 2 unless there was a reason other than comp. Just because Uber is OK poaching you doesn't mean the next company (possibly into the next recession) will see that move kindly.
4 months is too early in your career for this switch to be noticed, go for it I say but then stick for 2-3 yrs. don’t make this a habit
You can also not list the 4 months. Nobody will notice.
Stick with next company for 2-3 yrs. it need this much time in a company to really get exposed to enough variety of work and get growth and maturity
