Considerin leaving company after little over 4 months. Most of the factors that usually force ppl leave are actually fine (WLB, pay), but I just don’t see myself in SWE role at my current emplyer for the next 5 years. I guess I just don’t enjoy big tech anymore and not a good cultural fit. I am in late 30s, so I feel like I don’t have too much more time for trying different roles. I have offer from a much smaller (not really a startup) company where I will be working closely w biz stakeholders and learn new things, so I couldn’t pass up. Just feel bad about leaving at a personal level as my manager has been supportive during onboarding and feel like company invested a lot and I quite frankly haven’t paid much back in work. Thoughts? I'd stick to big tech company. All jobs suck but the non-technical or smallish tech firms are worse
This is unfortunately true.
That’s pretty subjective. A lot of unicorns are pretty awesome to work for. Same goes with earlier startups with big VCs behind them.
I would try to give it at least a year, 4 months at a big tech company won’t be a good look for your resume imo
4 months isn’t very long, it’s easy to feel out of sorts or like you don’t matter for the first year but once you take the time to prove yourself the respect level changes and so does your outlook It’s hard to beat the perks of a good large company
From the company's perspective, it's probably better for you to leave immediately than for you to stay and be disengaged and delivering sub-optimal performance. If you leave, they may be able to find someone for the role moving forward who they can investment in and develop into a future senior leader. So if I was you, I wouldn't feel guilty about leaving.
I share the exact same feeling as you op, but I am at a slightly younger age. Right now there is still learning, so I am hanging on for a few years more and see. Thanks for posting this I want to learn from people who have done this switch too.
Do it
Don’t worry - I left a company in 2 months and they keep calling me again.
Don’t feel bad it’s totally alright! Good luck 👍

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
Don’t feel bad for a company that is not yours, do what is the best for you. FB will be fine without you.
