Leaving tech, where to go

Qualtrics BuiltToSex

I hate software. I can't do this shit for the next 30 years. I'm at a point where I'll take a 50% paycut for some happiness. All of that money just goes into my investment account anyways, it's not increasing my quality of life. So what if my house isn't as big as it could be?

Programming is my only marketable skill. Not sure what else I can do to make a living. I've worked my way up to a pretty high TC that it's hard to walk away from. I wish I never got into tech.

+1, did this before working in tech (I work in Ops and started as a contractor and worked my way up) and it’s great money plus a lot of fun if you work at the right bar/club. You meet all kinds of interesting people and have a lot of freedom. Just make sure you have good shoes.

@torx, you don’t work in that kind of bar. Find a classy place that’s quieter where people actually sit at the bar and make conversation. I made $28/hr + tips working at a private member’s club where lots of rich and connected people were members

You’re not tired of tech. You’re tired of your current application area and working environment.

Switch to applying it to some area you care about, some non-profit, etc. The new people you work with won’t be jerks. You’ll take a massive TC cut, but you’ll stay fresh so there will be no fear about being able to switch back if you change your mind.

Or, go travel the world for 1 year. Then come back with a renewed appreciation for the ease of finding a cup of coffee, and being able to wash your car with purified drinking water.

^*This. Whenever I get the first world blues I travel to some exotic country for a couple of weeks.
It isn’t just appreciation for what I have. I marvel at how people in those countries have so few material possessions and deal with so much shit. Yet manage to have a smile on their face.
      It’s very inspiring to me.

FIRE and go travel / take a breather / catch your breath in life. Then be a serial entrepreneur and start a company that does something YOU want and are interested and passionate about. It’ll involve problem solving and thinking and learning but in so many more ways than coding and give you an opportunity to explore a ton of different paths, people, and ideas.

Jokes aside. I'm at the same point as you. Although I haven't leveled enough to get a great TC, I get paid well enough. Do you HONESTLY believe that's your only marketable skill? With your investment account you could open a bar, a restaurant, or some rental business like table and chairs for events or kids parties or what the hell do I know. Both you and I know that what we're really afraid is the possibility that we might jump out, fail miserably and regret it, on top of having everybody think you're an idiot and they would've done otherwise. It takea courage to make such a move. I hope Im courageous enough to do it some day. Best wishes to you OP and big hugs to you

If you love meetings and negotiating with stakeholders you’ll love UX design. Only about 20-40% of the job is actual design, and a lot of that is redoing mocks your stakeholders asked you to redo.

If you get to spend 20% of your time designing flows and UI’s that’s pretty damn good. It’s soooooo many meetings and lots of negotiating. I echo that, and then some.

It’s also fairly rewarding once you accept the realities of it. The company culture and immediate team matters a lot. If you get stuck with some former agency-type twat who thinks that visual design is everything, that’s annoying.

But I’d love to see more devs get into UX. Some of them would do brilliantly at it.
