I was pretty disappointed with Amazon's HR process. When I started I was offered a Web Development Engineer II and Software Development Engineer II position within AWS because I am a software engineer with focus on the front end, I chose WDE because it was likely I'd likely only have limited opportunities to work on front end applications.

I recently transitioned to the new Front End Engineer II role after pushing for it for months with my checked-out manager. I was a major contributor on a console and had launched some major features as primary contributor, and was the lead dev on another console yet to be released.

Despite my contributions making my team exceed our yearly goals while also launching a new console, and receiving a new title with a completely different payscale, at my performance review I was told I would only be receiving a 1.2% inflation increase in my pay because of "frugality".

I took a remote lead engineer position at a startup and haven't been happier

If you haven't been happier, why did you move? Did you think you would be but turns out you weren't?

For fun, I'd like to get in on this since English is my first language....and the context was very clear to me...when you say haven't been happier, that means have not been happier = I have not been happier before, hence I am happier now.

I’ve been seeing a lot of subpar google posts lately.

If you’ve never been happier then you’re happiest now.

Can somebody explain the frugality thing to me? Is that a leadership principle at Amazon?

Yes it is, it's one of their 14 principles to live by. They're all intentionally in tension with each other so they can justify their top-down decisions.

For example: customer obsession, invent and simplify, think big, insist on highest standards, dive deep are all leadership principles, but so are bias for action (cut corners to ship faster), deliver results (ship more), frugality (save time and money by cutting corners), and disagree and commit (which in practice means don't fight bad ideas and build it anyway)

Oh total comp, id say it's comparable

Old: 130k base, 100 stock units (vesting schedule 5, 15 annually, and 30 every 6 months after until 4 years

New: $135k base, 1.5% (33k) outstanding shares of company which is already profitable, 4 weeks vacation

Wait for their recruiters to start hitting on you. Get rehired on your terms. Solution 1.

Solution 2, just don't turn back.
