Got laid off from qcom in San Diego. Tc around 200k.
Interviewed with 6 companies. Only one offer with 20% cut. Should I move out of San Diego. Age 45+. Total worth 2.5 million.

Should I stay in San Diego with work life balance or move to Bay area where they might have better work/pay.

Snap and Amazon onsite interviews ahead

Not worth it in bay area man. San Diego is beautiful and quality of life is way higher. You have enough $$$ already, why give up the beaches, the amazing weather, and trade it in for run down and overcrowded shithole?

It's not about $$, even for double or triple the pay, the bay area simply doesn't offer the lifestyle SD does... Okay so you get a huge paying job in the Bay. What are you gonna spend it on? A nice car to sit in traffic on hwy 101 in? To cruise ugly beaches in cold and rocky Santa Cruz? Ocean Beach? Stinson? How many 45+ folks you see hanging out in the mission district SF? You've got kids, that hipster shit ain't cool no more. Gonna make it rain at Santana row? LOL! A house in a beat up neighborhood? A house in SF with human crap on your doorstep? In San Diego just drive down to Coronado beach, la Jolla, Pacific Beach, any freaking beach, with the windows down and have a beer while feeling the fresh ocean breeze blowing. Wear flip flops year round, lay on the sand, listen to music, have a picnic, grab some tacos. Doesn't take any TC at all and your happiness will be much higher. Why spend the second half of your career slogging it away? Enjoy the glorious years of your life. Go up to OC if you have to, more opportunities there, but coming to the Bay you'd be giving up a lot IMO.

So you take a 20% cut. Not the worst thing in the world. If it's 20% gross, post tax we're talking ~$20k total delta? Yeah that sucks but with your net worth I think you can handle it.

Agreed. I don’t even interview people from shitholes like the Bay Area.

Totally. Listen to this guy/ gal. Bay Area isn’t sexy at all. SD 1000x better. And they’re right about the beaches here!!

Don’t come to the Bay Area if you have kids going off to college. It’s too expensive for them! They’ll wanna be near mom and dad once they have babies. Ppl in bay are looking to LEAVE bc their kids and future generations wont be able to afford any property or decent life.

There was a side gig thread. I bookmarked it. This one is the I liked most: “Udemy and Skillshare! They regularly post about in-demand topics that people are looking for (like right now blockchain, 3D graphics, social marketing, and program management classes are hot right now). Do your research, get a good mic, and just record lectures via PowerPoint. Skillshare is good for short classes like less than an hour, Udemy is better for longer classes (but produces more cash)!”

Stay in SD. Bay Area too expensive and Sea too shitty of weather. Did you just save, save save to get to $2.5M or is that primarily in your residence?

defense is good for at least another 5 years because of republican spending, your job security will be fine for another 7-8 years. 20% after tax is like 20k which won’t be a big cut.
Downside is work won’t be cutting edge and you will be looking to retire after 7-8 years from now.

To be continued working in Tech, you need to move to Sillicon Valley/Seattle which your life will get a big hit.

If kids are about to go to college, you might want to consider relocating to Seattle. Having seen enough sun and beaches, seattle may attract you in terms of better job prospects and diverse culture.

California has a lot better schools than Washington for in state tuition... Berkeley and UCLA have better rankings in a lot of areas than UW. Might even throw UCSD in there for niche majors

You can buy a home 4 that $2.5 million in Bay area. Jobs are better here. If you hate you job in SD, you are stuck there. That is 8 hours a day of pain.

So you’re having a hard time not having a job?

I hear you. Happened to me. Took a voluntary package after 10+ years and had nothing lined up. Was out of work for about 3 months.

In hindsight, if I had your means, I’d have taken an entire gap year and spent it with my kids traveling. You could do that. There will always be work, maybe at lower TC, sure, but you’d be fine.

You could die tomorrow. This is an opportunity to gain perspective.
