Happy to have received an offer from LinkedIn (big data engineering). My recruiter says that since the big data eng org only has headcount in SV, I could only pick a team there. Bummed that I cant work from SF. A big part of why im leaving tesla is I feel socially unfulfilled. People there married and just wana do their work and go. No team feeling and very few young people my age. My understanding is that the LinkedIn SV office would be even worse than Tesla in this regard. Any advice for how I should handle this? I feel like the team in SV would be great in every other way. Perhaps if I do well for a year or two I could transfer teams. Alternatively, I could tell the recruiter I am not interested in SV positions and to let me know when SF positions are available. I have a couple other offers that are in SF but none are FANG tier. Thanks!
Lived in both Peninsula and SF, totally different in terms of social life. It will depend on your friend group, but just being around so many events is worth it. Going out almost every weekend with places for events usually being 30min away when living in the city. Choose what's better for you now, even if it's just more TC at LinkedIn compared to Tesla and continue looking for top tier offers in SF. You can also ask what openings they have in SF, maybe reinterview for Gen SWE?
Thank you for the advice. When it comes to being able to expand your friend group, what percentage contribution comes from working in the city vs living in the city? I am honestly afraid to reinterview. Dont want to blow the offer which is the best one I have.
It's a cycle that feeds into itself. Had one year where roommates didn't hang out much and I still commuted to peninsula, almost never went out that year. This year I go out almost every weekend and on some weekdays because roommates are connector type people. They go out all the time, make plans, keep in touch with new people we meet to go out again later. So for me, expanding into right friend group of connectors was the start, then because I'm in the city it was no problem meeting up whenever there were plans, and they knew I'd commit instead of giving a "San Francisco yes", flaky yes. If you don't show up too many times people will stop inviting you out.
Li SV is pretty boring—not that social at all and very family oriented when people do hang out. Maybe push harder for SF? SF office is definitely a way younger/cooler vibe.
There are no BDE teams in the SF office.

Could always take LI and jump from there in 6 months to a better place in SF.
