TC is 190k with 3 yoe. However i live with roommates at 1.2k (bay area) rent and drive a 2015 Honda Civic. I try to hide this frugal ness from friends, and peers. However, sometimes i am kinda forced to bring these up. E.g. requests to have friends/peers over. I feel a little ashamed at my situation. How do folks get over the shame? I have been just denying the requests for parties and trying to avoid the question in general.
Haha i swear sometimes i got a good laugh from the posts here. People sounds they have imaginary friends or some mental problems
Lol there's no need to hide frugality, don't feel pressure to spend big I proudly drove my 1998 Honda accord until its death
There is nothing shameful in what you are doing. You are saving for financial independence in the future, that is commendable. I say keep it up!
Don’t be ashamed. You’ll beat your peers at $1M actual net worth with no debt. That’s something to be very proud of.
So you want to keep up with appearances because of your friends? They don't sound like good friends. :( I drive an old 2002 civic but have my own place for $2300. I am in my 30s and am.tired of living with roommates. My coworkers make fun of me all the time, but guess what, I don't give a rat's ass. So when I get a new car, guess what they will say... "Why are you wasting money on rent?" :) It's never enough for people and everyone has an opinion on how YOUR money should be spent. Just remember, it's your money. You should not have to live with anyone else's expectation. Hate to ask, but are you Asian/Indian? I can see why you would not want to come across as frugal due to stereotypes. :(
Indian a subcontinent but not indian
?? Your username is in devnagri, but you're not Indian?
If your friends make you feel uncomfortable for being frugal, get new friends
I swear, sometimes I think people look for problems instead of being grateful for how good they have it. No perspective. 🙄
Wow I was living with Tc of 150k very proudly with my wife in Southern California. I don’t see why you need to live frugal at 190k, not saying to impress your friends and blow money off but you can easily be happy and enjoy life if you are single at 190k
Grew up poor so am comfortable with my current situation. However most my friends grew up middle class/rich so their expectations are different
I kind of understand what you mean. I didnt grew up poor, but my family never had money for extravagant expenses. That came down to me, and I don't feel comfortable spending too much eating out or buying most expensive cars. However, my advise would be to get over that and loosen a bit. You earn money to spend, but obviously don't make unnecessary expenses. If you say no to your friends every single time, you will loose them because of not spending enough time together. Make a compromise, but nothing unreasonable.
No one in their sane mind cares. If they do,, then they are better stayed away. That said, frugal doesn’t have to be unclean and messy. You can still stay organized. If you are single, keep your self organized, clean and well dressed. Focus on improving yourself, learning a new skill which will stay with you for rest of your life. Folks will come your way and go over time. You cannot control what others think.
