Hopefully some FB NY people can see this. I’m starting at FB soon in NY and debating if I should live in NJ (Hoboken or Jersey City) The benefits I see: - I save 3-4% on NYC income tax (that’s 10-20k a year) - Commute looks not too bad - Housing is cheaper and newer - NJ seems cleaner, less hectic - I don’t go out much, I’m engaged and living with my fiance, so I don’t have fomo I don’t know if I’m missing anything, in my situation why the hell would you not live in NJ??
Go to Newport NJ
Hoboken is as good as the city in terms night life
I was pretty shocked at the lack of diversity in hoboken (everyone is white)
Ya that's true, Jersey City has all types of hoods though. A train ride is only 10 mins away.
Why not? Increased commuting costs. Cost of potentially needing to own a car. Longer commute time and less flexible commute hours if you’re in the city until late and more changing trains. Less walkability. Less likely to be able to get friends to come to your place due to their commute. Things aren’t open as late, less 24 hour shops/food. Taxes are more complicated at end of year due to earning the income across state lines. Less to do without commuting to the city (though some areas are better than others)
NJ also has more less-than-ideal areas mixed in/around the decent parts. Hoboken is decently nice, but it’s almost as expensive as the city and significantly smaller.
Thanks for the points, most of them don’t apply to me, so I’m feeling validated for wanting to live in NJ lol
Definitely doable
Sir / mam - what’s your TC ?
Newport is better
Exchange place >>> Newport. Where is your office in Manhattan? If in Midtown, check out Avalon Cove in Newport for starters but there are tons of high rise options. If in downtown check out Exchange Place. Actually historic downtown has a few beautiful brownstone houses. Very spacious and perfect for couples.
9th st station
That’s the G office correct?. I would prefer exchange place if I were you. grocery online.. JC downtown/hoboken/Manhattan have tons(literally) of places to dine out. You’ll never be short on options.
If you don’t mind a 10-15 min walk to the PATH, check out the Hamilton Park area, much cheaper than downtown but still very safe/residential. I’m there now and starting at FB soon. For groceries I use FreshDirect, and for restaurants/food I walk 10 min to downtown or the mall

Renting or buying?
Renting for now
If you are fine with more suburban lifestyle and commute depending on weather, NJ seems like a good choice. NYC makes sense only if you prioritize living in the city.
