Recruiter phone call last night said Amazon wants to extend me an offer as a Contracts Manager supporting the Sales and Marketing team in AWS. I’ll be getting an email Tuesday with the official offer details, including TC (not even sure what level this is yet). If I accept, I’ll be moving from Southern Louisiana to the Seattle area. I’m married with a 2.5 year old. I’ve just started looking at the surrounding suburbs for housing options, schools, etc (talk about shell shock viewing house prices 😳). All that being said, how is living near Seattle and raising a young child? I’m sure they have a lot more to do than what I’m used to here, but we won’t know anyone there since all of our family and friends are in La.
It's very family friendly as long as you have $$
Be prepared to waitlist for child care. Average cost/month is ~$1500. You will see places for around $1k but they come w/ a lot of restrictions. Most families I know pay closer to $1800
This. During the gray and rainy days, you’ll want to sign your kid up for gym so they can get rid of pent up energy. Also take vitamin D.
Kirkland/Bellevue is where you wanna be. Don’t move anywhere north of Totem lake, east of lake Sammamish or south of I-90 freeway (except Mercer island): you’ll hate the commute.
Kirkland +1 Have raised a family there and was a very positive experience. Issaquah is nice as well. Not a huge fan of Bellevue if you are too close to downtown. Some of the outer areas between Kirkland can be nice.
Your kid will turn 10 before realizing that an umbrella is not an extension of the hand. You kid will develop webbed feet. You’ll need some strong weed killer to get rid of the moss growing on your feet. I can go on 😀
Are any of these areas (Kirkland, Bellview, etc) within 30 mins of Amazon? I’d ideally like a 30 min or less drive. I hear they have busses? Not sure how that works.
98033 is the top choice then. It’s right in the middle of G, FB (Oculus and the future norther Bellevue campus) and MS HQ. 10 mins to Bellevue downtown, up to 30 mins to SLU in a rush hour. Best restaurants, Costco, WholeFoods, TraderJoes, etc. are 5-10 mins away.
30 min? Really? +$3000k/month rent + $1800 in child care. Dont know what ur level is but anything within 30 min of the Big 2 employers is unbelievably expensive
Follow up question as we are contemplating a move from bay area to Seattle with a toddler. What's the playground situation? I'd like to be within walking distance of one. I see a lot of gardens and hiking trails but it's hard to see as many playgrounds.
Your toddler won’t like the outdoor weather from October to April when it is <55 degrees F on average and absence of sunshine.

You may want to live in a suburb and not Seattle proper. There are bums.
Living east of lake Washington is what you want. Sammamish has one of the lowest crime rates in the nation.
At least after Ted Bundy
