Long distance move. Any tips?

Moving from NYC to Seattle in a few weeks. Looking for best ways to move one bedroom apartment. Moving belongings looks to be more expensive than I expected. Even shipping with upack / pods estimated for around $3.5-4k, plus the effort of packing, loading, and unloading.
If we decide to leave the furniture, how do we move rest of the stuff? Did any of you move long distance recently? How did you do it? What would you recommend / not recommend? Any tips?

Sell everything. Move yourself. Buy everything.

    Reduce, reduce, reduce.

We did that and eod only had to get one container. It was the cheapest option and most logical for us.

In retrospect, I would suggest paying for all the help you can afford. Those little things will wear you down

Dont bring any furniture just buy it in seattle. I would fill a car and that is it.

I moved a studio from NYC to Bay Area just recently. My moving company charged me for only under 2.5K. They packed and unpacked for me too. I sold some of my furniture like bed frame so that reduced the cost.

Don’t use upack/pod et-al. They’re way more expensive, won’t pack for you, and just don’t work for NYC. You can’t park the container on the street.

Sounds good. Do you know the moving company name if you have any details?

Yeah, pod seems like a lot of money and effort. Don't want to do that.

I’ve seen people calling movers to pack and unpack, then driving uhaul themselves. Seattle is a long drive though

Really simple math. Is buying all new stuff cheaper than moving costs for you? Do you have keepsakes that you have to move. I would not bother moving myself unless it was just a few suitcases on a flight.

Use Amtrak shipping for boxes. Only moved once so boxes won’t be destroyed

Zillow. Haven't decided yet. Got a few quotes from movers. Evaluating what stuff is worth moving. Depending on that either hire movers or going to stuff the car with as much stuff as possible, check in baggage, and ship rest with Amtrack or UPS. Still have a week or two to decide.

Cheapest option is to use Amtrak. Did a similar cross-country move. Sold/donated furniture, packed/shipped everything in 15 boxes. Amtrak charged <$400. Shipped tv via fedex.

Sounds good.. I'll get an estimate from Amtrack. I'll have about 15-20 boxes as well.

I moved from Chicago to Seattle with a Penske truck. If you have a week to kill, a road trip is fun.

I did pods one time and they damaged a ton of my shit, I don’t think I’ll use a packing service again tbh.

Good to know this.. I'll avoid pods. They already seemed expensive and hassle.

Why are people moving out of NYC? You need to realize once you are in Seattle it's going to be very hard to move back to NYC.
