Just apply, referrals are near-worthless if the person isn't able to vouch for your work.
There is no way you're going to get a good referral from a random anonymous person on here. Use your contacts, reach out to people on LinkedIn, use your connections, go to mixers, go to events, etc.

Design and research are very different roles, you should pick one, not both.
