Looking for referrals

I’m a SDE-1 at Amazon with a little under 1 YOE. I’m really unhappy with my situation at amazon and am looking for new opportunities. I think I came into the company ignoring some of rumors and brushing them off as people who just like to complain but being here for a year I realized i don’t want to be here long term. My team is filled mostly with people on H1Bs who don’t make an effort to include other people (I’m south Asian but grew up in America). I also feel like I’m not growing as an engineer with the work that I’m doing and I’m tired of getting late night messages from people working at midnight or teams in other countries messaging me saying they need something done ASAP. My manager has been very honest with me in letting me know how the company’s politics works and I really appreciate it but it’s made me less inclined to stay here so I’m looking for referrals. If anyone would like to help me out, I’d really appreciate it! Looking for referrals for: Google Facebook Uber Airbnb LinkedIn And a couple other companies so please reach out!

You should stay and get more yoe before trying

PayPal jhoom May 1, 2019

This is a stupid suggestion!

Oath Atinlay2 May 1, 2019

Try hopping companies with “a little under 1 yoe” and let me know how it turns out.

Amazon freezerpan May 1, 2019

Nonsense. How will it things be different in a year? Make the move. If something is wrong, change it

Amazon Yolo! May 1, 2019

What do you mean by not including you? I just want to understand what your expectations are

For example, they’re always talking about their lives back in India and it makes it difficult to relate. Or they’ll always make snarky remarks about people who grew up in America. Even like with just hanging out, they’ll grab lunch together and I’ll only join if I happen to see them during lunch where they kinda have to invite me. I get it, my parents are immigrants as well and I see the attachment to wanting to stick with people who are similar to you but I think that makes it difficult for me to like my coworkers and I feel like if you’re spending that many hours around people you have to at least somewhat like them. As a minority American, I think I’d rather just move somewhere else where I can get along with my coworkers better

It happens the other way around too, talk about football all day etc. I think you’re still in college mode where you expect to make friends in the same class and get along with teammates outside of work. You don’t have to, just maintain a professional relation and look for friends in other teams who can be your lunch mates. You’ll find such cliques everywhere, I just think you’re expecting something you shouldn’t.

That's the exact opposite of what op is looking for 😂

Nvidia wagecuck May 1, 2019

No one is interested in that

Amazon Yolo! May 1, 2019

If you think other companies don’t have politics, you are mistaken. It exists everywhere on varying levels depending on teams and organizations, you’re no longer in college; it’s not a frat party.

What org? What do you mean by not growing as a engineer?

Medallia has alwa May 1, 2019

Everything you complaining about is at every company - especially the larger the company like you are interested in.

Can I dm you as well?

I'd probably recommend trying to switch teams first. Especially if you are in Seattle there are so many teams. Less than 1 year IS a little short to start company hopping

It happens all the time. I would say its lack of meaningful company that is giving you troubles. Find people to go to lunch / activities with. Your team mates won't change.
