Young product marketing manager, who has started a couple of start-ups. Want to get into the Product Owner role within the next couple of years. What are some resources you'd recommend I read/watch/study? Any courses on Coursera, Udemy, or edX?
Land a Product Management job and learn while doing. Simple to say but probably the best path
Indeed easier to say. I'll try get on that path while studying some of the resourced suggested to me on this thread so far
Take a good Agile PO class. In the Bay Area, I can recommend one I really liked. With that find a way to switch roles internally. Do that for a couple of years. Also, later on, take the Pragmatic Marketing or the Berkeley Product Management course.
Will definitely have a look into these. The scrum course was next on my list, but will have a look at the PM course from Berkeley too
I own a bunch of products. I bought them
Go try building one!
That’s building not owning
Meet some people at the product school meet ups: and just take on some products at your current role on the downlow. There yah go!
Didn't know about product school meet ups. Not in the Bay Area, but will see if they have it where I'm based
See if you can move internally. When you say PMM what type of work did you do? Go to market strategy? You need to play to your skills and convince how that helps the needs of the company. It’s hard breaking into PM. Make the product team where you are now know your interests and have deep opinions on the product and product strategy. Show your execution acumen with your current role. Make yourself valuable. Being a great PM is about setting a good vision and being able to execute. Vision comes from having intuition and opinions from fully developed thoughts about a product. Good luck!!
A portfolio of products and a PO/PM or CSPO won’t hurt.
