Low TC in Seattle or High TC in Midwest? Goal to get into FAANG.
I failed in my current round of job applications, couldn't get into any FAANG, MSFT or unicorns. My options are now low TC $130k in Seattle or a $170k TC in a Midwest state. COL are comparable in both locations after adjusting for no WA tax. I'll go out 6mth from now in June 2019 to interview again, after Amazon cool down period is over. Will living in Seattle help? I plan to network there to get referral, and get involved in leetcode meetups, I find that the social support during interview prep is very important. Downside is if economy crashes I'll be fucking stuck at a low TC position for half a decade! Being exiled to the Midwest will be hard, as I have to use more vacation days and fly out for interviews. Also from a social standpoint, I'm 30+ single non-white male and would like to change that, and the dating scene sucks there. Upside is TC. is living in a FAANG heavy city worth the $40k in TC?

Unless you are trying to live in downtown Chicago, I don't think COL are close to each other. Even Chicago would still be cheaper. Dating scene in seattle isn't any better... probably worse. Stay.
I did the math. No state tax is about the same as rent difference.

There's not many...for sure...but there are companies that are starting to pay pretty well...its definitely an exception...rather than the norm...
Why do you specify the first place to a CITY level and leave the second one to a broad region? City/state or GTFO.

It sounds like Seattle will make you happier. As a single guy the money is probably fine. If you feel the same about both locations, then go for TC. But it sounds like you really dislike the idea of the Midwest, to me the money wouldn’t be worth living somewhere I dislike.
Which city in the Midwest? In my experience dating in the Midwest will be better than Seattle. Much more single women and they arent as jaded. TC is also more so move

You don't need to be in Seattle to interview. Also if you move to Seattle for a FAANG they are probably going to pay the relocation. Not worth the 40k difference
