What are the low cost trading account available to invest in ETFs? I'm looking for options outside 401k account, so if I need the money in emergency I can take it out. Appreciate your help.

ETFs are better for taxation, comparing to mutual funds

Don’t know what to tell you man, I’ve never received any tax form for individual securities in a mutual fund being turned over for a decade from 5 brokerage companies. Only capital gains in the event of a sale of fund, or the dividend .

1099-div is typically (few exceptions none of which are what you are mentioning) for Dividend reporting. Whether you re invest dividends to mutual fund or collect it as cash, it’s taxable.

Mike Piper is full of shit and/or has terrible wording.

Edit: no, he is full of shit.

Or could it be some obscure rule in tax code which is not always enforced by IRS? I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case.

@liam, care to clarify why you think ETFs are better for taxation?

If you owe any taxes on the trades done inside the fund you will be given a single slip at the end of the year with the "distribution" of taxes you owe. One slip, with your total share summed up. You do not personally account all their trades.

Usually well managed funds have no distribution of taxes. Some funds that pay foreign taxes distribute the foreign tax credit to unit holders so you can claim it back

    Vanguard.

Easy decision. Buy into admiral funds ($10k minimum) and you get the same expense ratio as ETF but zero trading fees. You can convert to ETF any time you want since it's the same underlying fund.

Vanguard are head and shoulders above the rest. Mr Money Moustache has a lot of nice things to say about them, me too.

True, but they don't have any scheduling. If I want to buy every month or biweekly I can't do that. I have to buy manually.

I have been happy with E-Trade, Scottrade, and Ameritrade. The last two are merging. They all have very low fee's, and let you purchase ETFs, mutual funds, and stocks with decent apps. Each has a list of ETFs with no fee trades, so if you have an ETF in mind, you may want to check that, but can't go wrong with any of them.

Also do they allow you to do scheduling in your investment, like buying in a regular schedule automated way? Every month, or weekly etc.
