Moving with interviews at the two. What to expect for a L64 Sr Software Engineer?

- Snapchat / EngYongsonSpaceX comp is very very very bad. I wouldn't expect more than 200-250 total comp.
- For the workload, that total comp is pretty high honestly. SpaceX pays their software engineers less than others and the hours are long long long(65-80/week).
@arjw68, it’s probably $115k base, so take into account CA taxes that’s ~70k take home.
2.5k/month for rent/utilities, that’s 30k a year gone, so $40k, car payments - $325/month that’s another 4K. Down to 36. Food is ~$350/month so we’re down to about $30k take home.
Likely student loans, at ~$400/month. Another $5k down. So $25k take home at this point.
Add in clothes, entertainment, medical, gas, travel and it dwindles fast.Nov 6, 20173
- 200-250 in LA is not a lot for a high senior engineer. It's high for other professions but not a L64 engineer. It's just a fact. When you can get 350-400+ elsewhere, it's low. Especially since SpaceX is known to work you VERY VERY hard.
Also, his rent estimates are conservative. If you want something luxury, it'll be 3k+. The tax estimate was also generous. You'll lose almost half of your pay to tax.Nov 6, 20172
- You won't find anything in Playa/MDR that was built in the last 30y for under 2500 anymore (maybe a studio but I doubt it). Luxury being rock counters, wood floors and stuff, new (last 10y), no homeless all over the place, no section 8. That'll run you 3k in Playa/MDR nowadays.Nov 6, 20171
