Lyft vs Nest vs Amazon

I have verbal offers from these companies for software engineering roles ( I have around 3.5 years of experience along with a Masters ). Will hopefully get the numbers this week. I am inclined a bit towards lyft as its still young, seemed to have good culture and felt like the work will be exciting. Although, not sure how their compensation will stand against amazon and nest. Nest just launched a whole bunch of products and felt like they are getting back on track again. Also everyone in the team there moved from Google and seemed really really smart and friendly. Amazonโ€™s offer is for lab126. I have heard some bad reviews about the work culture in general but not sure. Any pointers / thoughts appreciated !

  • Now is the time to join Lyft. Preparing for IPO. You're young so if it doesn't come to fruition you have years to fix the mistake. Meanwhile, you could be a leg up on everyone else who was more conservative.

Amazon hands down, assuming offer is not too far apart.... after 10+ years only Amazon will survive.. Lyft and Nest will be gone..

Who cares what happens after 10 yrs. OP can switch after 2 yrs right. It's not a bond for life.

Lyft of course. Growing super fast, crazy difficult technical challenges, great team and just a super fun environment to work at.

Do you have an example of one of these challenges? Genuinely curious

How do you manage a two sided market that is about one square mile time 5 minutes across the entire US while keeping an overview of a city / state / country. How do you balance supply and demand over long periods of time and grow in balance during seasons where you get more and less demand.

This ^. Donโ€™t think Lyft is going anywhere for the next 4-5 years.

There is definitely enough room in the market for Lyft to continue to grow and thrive.

I think Amazon is going to crush Nest. Amazon has their own camera product now and the subscription is all cheaper than Nest. Only a matter of time before Amazon also adds a thermostat and fire alarm and everything else Nest has.

That kicks lyft out of the picture. I have faith in lyft though. Their loss margin is lesser than uber and their market share is increasing. Also google just invested 1b $

Disclaimer: I haven't worked for Amazon and can only speak from the experience of friends.

Amazon is a nightmare to work for from stories I've been told by more than a handful of people. The people I know joined and bailed after not too long because of the environment (under 2 years), and have continued to preach that the grass is greener.

If you value your happiness and want to feel like you're able to make an impact, I didn't get a feeling of that being very possible inside Amazon from those I know.

At Amazon you will probably learn a lot and grow really fast. Lyft/Nest will probably give you a better initial offer and better work life balance.

Do you work at Nest ? There was a speculation that google might sell Nest last year, did you hear anything about it. Also, I was wondering if people are able to move to Google from Nest as internal transfers ?

Nest but stay away from the IE org. If it doesn't work out, you can transfer to Google like half the people that were at Nest did in the last year. Or move to Facebook and get a raise.
