MIT Engineers at Oracle ?

How does Oracle retain top talent from MIT even now ? What's so attractive about Oracle ? What kind of technologies do MIT engineers work with at Oracle ? Do they actually do real engineering like building kernels, OS, etc things that are not learned at bootcamps ?

And those who work for oracle are not top talent either

You think hiring someone who attended MIT because of consistent academic performance for 2 years of their lives makes them some sort of superstar? I could go to a random school in Syria and get into MIT that doesn’t mean I’m a genius

Facebook BadSWE Sep 2, 2019

You’d be shocked at how many average students attend crappy high schools and get into these schools

Google Monogatari Sep 3, 2019

MIT looks for more than just "consistent" academic performance btw

Don’t listen to this guy. You’ll join oracle and ruin your career

One of the laziest and most entitled engineers at my post grad school internship went to MIT. It’s just a signal. Top talent on my team is a drop out and someone from a no name school.

Mad that the only people who want to work for SAP are from bootcamps?

Oracle DB team is pretty good. Though it is still in C with a lot of legacy, it consistently attracts great talent. I know people who have Phds in computer science working there and they are happy. Also I heard from a manager there that for top performers Oracle comfortably outpays Google or Facebook.

How? The product sucks. So badly, working with it feels like legacy

Amazon AMZNBucks Sep 3, 2019

Just because mommy and daddy has money to send them to an expensive school or they struck gold with a scholarship doesn't really make them better software engineers 😂 unless they have a PhD and doing research, they're the same as the rest of us

Oracle Stream.of Sep 3, 2019

You are right. Harvard Med and Law schools are the same as Chico state. Similarly Sloan vs. KU. Yep, you make sense. It is okay if you weren’t accepted to a top school. Let it go.

Amazon AMZNBucks Sep 3, 2019

I didn't apply to one. It was out of my budget, I came from poverty Yet somehow I'm still doing better than you in life 🤔🤔 oh well, enjoy getting laid off, Oracle. Before they issue the severance make sure to tell them you went to a "too" school Also, nobody cares what school you went to after you start working. So it doesn't impact shit, having a FANG on my resume helps more than having an ivy league in tech

The thing is that top talent is well compensated, and it’s the company interest to keep it like that. Oracle (and I imagine most companies) adhere to 80%-20% rule regarding work force where 80% are 9-5ers and 20% are pushing the company forward. Source: myself and colleagues across orgs. Education: advanced degrees top 3 schools. Last cycle: 15% increase + 5 figure RSU. Level: IC5. Org: non OCI nor DB.

Oracle is a finished company. 🗑 tier in my opinion

Like it or not, we are all guns for hire, so only bank account matters. (PS, FWIW, FB recruiters contact me weekly, and I can’t bring my self to consider it.)

I work for a startup in India and the CTO is from MIT and has worked for Oracle US. He is sitting exactly behind me as I type this. I have never met a bigger idiot than him in my life. His practical skills are less than any developer I have met till date. Because of him I have lost all respect for MIT. So I highly doubt your question that top talent from MIT. Whenever I make one change in the design I have to explain to him 5 times whereas others understand instantly. He is more interested in bragging that he is from MIT rather than learning new skills and doing some meaningful work. These are just privileged kids with lots of money. They are dud. No talent. Though he is more proud that he is from IIT than MIT. When he needs to brag in front of normal Indian candidates he says he did his bachelors from IIT. When he needs to brag in front of IITians he says he did his masters from MIT. But I have never seen him talk any tech. A lot of smart candidates figure it out right during the interview and reject our offers. I am using React for our frontend he said to a candidate we are using Angular I was like wtf!! He is not even aware of what's happening in the company. Dud person!!!
