I’m a new grad from a ML MSc program, background in CS. I have two offers - one is an Applied ML role the other is a Research Scientist ML role. Eventually (within 2-3 years) I want to do Applied Research/R&D - which of those two will give me better long term opportunities? The RS role pays 40% more, but I don’t want money to be the deciding factor. I’m a bit split now - Applied role will give me more hands on, production experience, Research role will give me a stronger understanding of the field. Can’t share company names, that would be too indicative. Comps: Applied ~220k vs. Research ~300k
40% difference is very hard to ignore
Also this. 40% increase out the gate will compound nicely going forward. Although we still need raw numbers to make a comparison
Can’t give exact numbers... but both offers very good for new grad. Think 200k+
We have to know the companies to give you an answer. Not knowing the companies, my guess is that your peers will be stronger at the place where comp is 40% higher.
Get industry hands on . Some ships sink fast.
Both are industry roles
Company names or gtfo
It is Amazon alexa most likely
No TC. No company name. But need genuine advice?? Its good to be discreet but this is just pointless!
Updated info.
Lol that doesn’t help. You told us 200k+ offers and that one was 40% more than the other. That is enough detail to know the size of the difference of salary. If the option is 220k at google vs 300k at magic leap, I’d go with google. My guess is 220k amazon vs 300k anywhere else, I’d take 300k anywhere else. :)

Both at google?
Neither at Google, but both in brand name companies.
What are the companies? Useless without knowing that
