Hi folks, i have bachelors in Accounting and 10yrs of experience in accounting field. Now studying masters in data science in UW La Crosse, i have tried multiple times to get internship but no luck at all everyone declines not sure why even though i have projects on my website and did a lot of interesting work throughout my classes. I have googled on indeed the average start pay for DS its about 85 and up but most of the jobs want you to have experience. I love the field and wondering how much did you start at with DS degree preferably colorado area and how long it took you to get a job? Thx

  • DS seems to be very competitive. Most DS around my team come from Ivy or phd.

In some schools MS in DS is almost similar to CS . MS in DAta Analytics is waste of time and money . They teach excel and SQL .

I completely agree with you however the only reason applied for those internships is to get some experience in related field, however everyone i have talked to they said dont bother about internship and just get a job once graduate

    • SQL is important for ds. Most ds interviews have an SQL round. No one teaches excel in data analytics.

That being said, go for ms cs.

I agree on the SQL . There are more than 100 universities offer MS in Data Analytics . I checked and many schools curriculum contains excel modeling which is some VB and V lookup and also contains lot of business courses like Financial Management , Project Management , etc .

OP by the way it’s not an MBA in Data Science.... it’s an MS (Masters of Science)... assuming there’s a language barrier, but if your resume says “MBA in Data Science” engineering managers are going to be confused

Probably should just LeetCode and get a SWE job. Data Science is just a fad

Im not really into programming , like DS more coz of modeling , more interesting. My programming sucks so far but definitely will improve. I have seen most places pay more for DS , there are a lot of jobs but not sure on how it is when fresh out of college.
