My brother did his bachelors in Electronics and communication. He plans to do his masters in CS and is looking for help in university selection.

Q) Apart from edulix, is there any other platform which evaluates profile?

Q) How important is the university factor in terms of jobs?

Q) Many of my friends did their MS from some school with low tuition in Bay Area and all are placed in great companies. Should he just apply to those universities?

Can anyone please advice?

I think that attaining H1B with little experience out of college will be difficult in the coming years

Immigration is fucked up here. Unless you go for PhD, stay in India.

Don’t listen to these people! Immigration might be tough but not impossible. People who will do masters will be better off. He can enroll in a decent university and find a job in Bay Area.

Location of university plays a big role in getting a good internship and helps a lot in full time as well. Btw I didn’t study in a good location, seen the pain of getting interview calls.

Wouldn’t really listen to everyone commenting not to come to the US. A lot of people I know are getting calls from good companies.
For CS I wouldn’t worry too much

Like one comment said the location plays a big role in getting internships. If you manage to convert the internship then it’s all good.
I would recommend colleges like USC that has a strong placement program. You need to work a bit, but not super hard to land a good job

Yeah opportunities are good. But I doubt the visa. I know people from Amazon/Google had to leave USA just because they couldn't get lucky In visa lottery. Also with heavy costs and taxes and no free medical / public benefits I doubt USA is best place now.

People eventually got the visa so need to worry. They will relocate you for a year and then apply again!

Does USC MS - CS program require CS background?

If you have it’s good. Otherwise it’s still ok. I know people who weren’t from CS and still got an admit for MS CS program. Since your brother has worked in MSFT, I think he should get an admit for CS.

I would also suggest trying SJSU MS in software engineering.

Because us immigration is really in a bad shape right now. Unless you are ready to go back after you studies , I won’t suggest wasting so much money here.

No. Government moves at snail pace. It will certainly happen but by that time it won’t matter to us anymore.

Europe should be his first choice.Canada is too small.Any European country gives you access to 4-5 job markets.Ask him to start learning French or German.
Also look at Japan.Australia would be similar to Canada.
Indian colleges are horrid so any of these countries will offer him a good quality of education. The immigration process in each of these places is relatively simple if you have studied CS and have a job offer.

University of Toronto, University of British Columbia, University of Waterloo, Simon Fraser University(backup). Canadian schools are supposed to have decent CS programs. Way better Visa system. CAD/INR way lower that USD/INR. There are decent starting opportunities and possibility of finding work in the US on H1B or TN (in the future) if they opt to immigrate to Canada

If he gets a schol or some aid he should definitely come here for his MS. US univs are still the best. He can get a job in other places if it doesn’t work out here, too companies will place in their offices abroad
