Which one is better to join in 2018 as a researcher: Microsoft Research or Google Brain? What are some pros and cons?
I will go for Google Brain. MSR was quite awesome but of late, lots of people have left and people from MSR have been accommodated to other product related orgs (at least in computer vision space, I know a few examples).
Do you think MSR gives more independence and flexibility to the researchers (assuming it is not a product related org)?
They have problem on leadership. They don’t know whether they should focus on research or do more product. I think msr’s time already passed
Think it depends, brain id you're into ML and MSR most other areas of CS
This. MSR does aresearch in other areas such as randomized algorithms, distributed systems and crypto.
There’s a mass exodus from MSR to G Brain and FB AML/FAIR
When I left MS for Google, it seemed like MSR was losing all of their top talent to Google. I’d take this as a pretty strong signal.
If you’re an early stage researcher (<7 years out of PhD), MSR is the best. All the freedom in the world to work on anything you want. After 7 years, you may want to grow elsewhere or at MSR. But for early stage researchers MSR is still the best if you care about freedom. Disclosure: MSR researcher.
Google Brain is no brainer.
Why the views in the post is totally different from I have heard myself? My PhD friends from top CS programs said MSR is far best place if you want to do research
I dig your screen name
MSR is just a bunch of lazy slackers who toss out worthless papers. Brain is headed by Jeff Dean

Wow. Congrats! Did you get both offers? Willing to share TC and profile? Both are great but I like the sound of Google Brain :)
