Microsoft uses windows. What do you mean your work isn't related to developing windows?

Not true. Don't generalize what happens in your team to the entire company...

I had a Surface Book 2 as well as a desktop in DS

SB2 was the best laptop I've ever had, beats the tar out of my current MBP

Half my team uses Mac and the other half uses Surface book/laptop. It is really team dependent, but most places if you have a preference and can justify it nobody has an issue giving you the tools you need to do your job

Half of my team and myself included use a Mac at work. If vscode works for your dev then there is absolutely no reason to use a windows machine.

If I were a gambling man I bet money you’ll be getting a Windows machine, that being said you could always just bring in your personal Mac and use it (depending on the team you are on).

I’ve been using a Mac since I joined 4 years ago. Not a developer personally, but around 2/3 of the developers and PMs I work with use a Mac (a few even use Linux on their laptops).

But it depends on your team and role. If you’re going to be developing in C#, chances are you’ll need Windows and Visual Studio, for obvious reasons.

Don’t cry, you can use bash on Windows 10 now https://youtu.be/PivpCKEiQOQ

There are some teams working on services that use containers and they do get a macbook pro (if they chose) for dev work. However, a bunch of tools needed to work in Microsoft do not work on mac. But if your team works on a service written in C#, service fabric etc. you have to use a windows machine. Windows is ok for dev work, the shell sucks though.

Have you ever run it in Vmware and set the nic configuration? I dare you. And as of Azure VM’s you cant have arbitrary ports open (aka security) and its slow because you are developing over a network. If you read the thread all these points are already made.
      Jan 20
    • Microsoft PMM’d
Both those are non-issues if you just learn the basics of networking. I’m actually shocked by how many developers don’t know anything about this very important topic :) (and yes I’m a PMM)

Setting up a NIC in VMWare is extremely easy.
And using NSGs on Azure to control what ports are open (and from what IPs) is very easy too (or use a VPN).

How’s that not an answer? You said you need to run the emulator on Windows. I told you you can, and networking isn’t an issue.

There are a small portion of people using Mac. Some of them install Windows on MacBook eventually 😊

    • Microsoft PMM’d
Absolutely not true. It depends on the team and what you work on.

(It’s true that everyone with a Mac does have a VM with Windows however, as many internal tools require Windows or even IE. The number is constantly decreasing, however)

Mac support suuuuuucks at Microsoft. It's a pain but maybe you'll find the right people to help with the network/security issues you'll encounter.
