Making less than coworkers with less experience

After talking to some of my coworkers I realized I make 5-10k less than them when they are a) younger than me, and b) have less experience. I’ve tried making cases for a raise, but haven’t flat out told them that I found out I’m making less. How do I go about this?

Start interviewing at other companies and bring back a competitive offer if you really want to stay or just switch companies. How long have you been working there for?

Over a year and they hired in around the same time give or take a few months

Perhaps they negotiated for a higher offer while interviewing? There’s a band everyone is in and people have different motivations for what they will accept.

You think it’s unfair that a younger person is making more money than you? Are you kidding? Maybe you should be more relevant and useful to your employer. If you already are then just ask for a fucking raise.

No need to be hostile, we’re in the same generation. And that’s my ask, how to carefully ask for a raise knowing this info.

Was that really necessary?

Years of experience means nothing if you cannot prove with work.

Accept that your market value isn’t tied to YOE.

Maybe they negotiated harder than you did? Anyways if you discuss salaries with your peers, very likely someone is going to feel shafted.

Start interviewing.

Asking for a raise never works and is a frustrating and emotionally taxing endeavor. The time and energy you spend arguing for a 5-10k raise is better spent studying for interviews and securing a 20% bump. If you don’t get any better offers, at least you know that’s what you are worth and can live with it or work on self improvement.

Stop obsessing over TC.

Apple 👨🏻‍💻☕️ Sep 14, 2018

You’re not obsessed about TC, you’re probably right that the diff in pay is mostly arbitrary, and it sounds like management is calling your bluff expecting you to stay without a raise. You have only one good option, which is to get a huge raise somewhere else. On the bright side, you could have just been satisfied with a small 5k raise. You can actually get a lot more than that on the open market.
