Manage a toxic and a hostile work environment

How did you manage a toxic and a hostile work environment? Besides changing for another job. Don’t think complaining to HR would work at all. How to not let he bullying, put downs and shaming affect your mood and the motivation? If you want to concentrate on the work itself and achieve something before the next job? How to ignore the bs? Wish Karma ? Thanks

You mean wear them in meetings?

Hopefully in meetings the presence of other people would keep the bully well behaved. If not, and if no one else stands up against the bully then it sounds like a pretty crappy place to work.

Unfortunately no easy solutions. Switching teams is usually the best option if feasible

Unfortunately a toxic place is much more likely to change you than you are to change the environment. Get out if you can.

I can attest to that. In my experience, the perpetrator has become more vocal and condescending as the time has passed even though my skip level has had several talks with him.

Yes being diplomatic , praising when some one does a good work, pointing at the actual problem than person, will make you look good , earn respect from others, and the toxic person will stand out ( even he is good in playing nice to others ) end of the day, you need to decide wether it’s really worth investing your time on him? Having a good manager who can identify and take actions as this is impacting your performance helps. Again, if you are woman in a ic role, this is a day to day struggle, no matter how experienced and knowledgeable you are, how hard you work. Escalate these higher up, cc your skip level and the HR if the manager does not take action. Never tolerate harassment

Focus focus and focus, and don’t give damn. Also if situation is getting worse start taking proofs.

Any examples you can share?

Is this at Pinterest? Wow I thought the work culture there was so laid back

I have faced the same thing. The best solution is to tell your manager that he's being rude and draw the line early on and if no action is taken even after going to higher ups, you know that it's only going to get worse. Also, document everything. Present it to HR before you leave so that the same does not happen to another employee. In my team, my few months old manager has been disrespectful to several individuals after singling them out. Not a good sign.

Leadership tolerates toxic environment to avoid shaking the boat or otherwise is aloof. It is structural. You have to undermine and subvert the bully.
