What to do if my manager asks me to come in to work over the weekend/holiday to finish a demo for upper management? They tell me they’ll be personally offended if I don’t. I already made travel plans that I would have to cancel.
If it's a rare occasion then I might be willing to cancel my travel plans given that company will compensate. If this is common, there is no way I will cancel my plans.
That is a tough one, is your relationship with your manager good enough that you can explain that you've already had travel plans? Depending on the demo is there a way that you can do your work remotely. Unfortunately in my org the trend is to be online more and more to the point that it doesn't seem like there are weekends anymore 😞
Are your shares vested or are you waiting for a cliff?
Which org ? I didn't know that there are teams like this in Google
That’s fucked up. Find a new job dude.
Ask him to duck off
Tell him you are willing to help and will do what you can remotely but have travel plans which you are unable to cancel.

Once this happened to me and I said no. I was fired after. The company had issues, and I don’t think they’re around anymore.
Doing it remote would be the usual solution, this isn't kindergarten. All that matters is that what needs to get done gets done
you can score big points. if my travel plans were to visit the in-laws, i’d pick work
You have two options. If you refuse to do it and go for your vacation, then there is a high chance that you might be fired. Or you do it and get appreciated. I would suggest you do it and then immediately start looking to change jobs.

These managers will not change. This is definitely the way to go
Tell him/her to back off. You can come anytime you want! Oh wait...
