Question: Has anyone ever tried to use an offer from another company to get a raise in salary, have that fail, but then stayed on with the company? How did that work out for you ? Details: I recently interviewed with a company and in return got an offer. It’s a nice bump in TC (about 40k), but unfortunately for me it is not a company I am interested in joining. But knowing that my current company has a very friendly counter offer policy, and at the encouragement of a friend who had similar success, I decided to try and use this offer to get a raise nonetheless. It didn’t work. Even more awkwardly the reason it didn’t work is because of my manger. While my manager got approval for the counter, he decided not to. His stated reason is because of some comments I made earlier in the year, he feels I would still be a flight risk even if he did pursue the counter for me. Oddly enough he is still strongly encouraging me to stay on. He is making promises to work with me to get a promotion so I can get a raise through that route instead. He is promising it won’t be awkward between us if I stay on. Lots of other promises. But at the end of the day it was his decision, not the companies, to not try and retain me. Frankly, that’s a huge punch to the stomach. It is hard to know what to believe. I’m not sure what to do. I don’t want to take this other offer. But I’m not sure I have a choice. Do I stay on and believe him and work towards promotion? Do I try to switch teams? Do I just coast, try to interview as many other place as possible until I find a place I do want to go to? Anyone ever been in a similar situation? What did you do?
I've found leaders typically see attempts to leave and power play as personally threatening. Leave on the best terms possible and put some more applications out and find somewhere you want to be
Your manager outplayed you. Games up unfortunately
Promises of managers/recruiters, etc don’t mean shit unless they are written down and signed! I was promised a lot of things by my manager, his manager and our director, for the end of the year. Within a span of 5 months, all three of them switched jobs! Now, nobody Senior even knows my name. It was good that I have 3 other extremely good offers in hand. Don’t let these ‘promises’ entice you.
How would getting them in writing have helped?
You just played yourself.
My manager promised me a promo and the ability to move into management if I stayed. I stayed. My manager ended up hiring someone above me so no promo and no longer an option for me to move into management. I also don’t like the new manager hired above me. I’m now looking to change teams or companies. Don’t rely on promises, get it in writing or leave.
It is better to leave or plan to leave. Buy some time with that other company and see if you can interview more. I feel if there are layoffs your manager might nominate you. Because you were not very interested to continue in the first place.
Also the way this works is you give your notice and if your manager really wants you to stay they give the counter offer. I have been asked what can we do to make you stay before
Seems like you backed yourself in a corner. But you can possibly flip this a bit so you don't seem like you tried to stiff arm them. I would have a personal conversation with the manager explaining your reasoning for looking for raise and another job. Thank them for offering to work towards a raise in the future and accept the offer. But give (do not ask) a timeline for that to happen. 3 mos. 6 mos. Etc. and see if they budge/agree. If not then this will be your new internal timeline to exit the company for good. Hope this helps. Good luck!
What a FANTASTIC manager. Suck it up, improve and earn that promo.
I've been in that spot several times as a manager and the right call is usually to not match and offer a short term path to the same objective to see if the person really wants to stick around.

You have leverage in a negotiation when you are willing to walk away. Big mistake hoping for a counter when you were not ready to quit. Your manager just called your bluff. Now you don’t have a choice. Line up other interviews ASAP.
