I know of at least two positions being cut at MapR this month (March). I wonder if they’re trying to cut expenses to make themselves more appealing for IPO and/or acquisition.
Who are mapr customers?
You can look it up on our website. Many small to medium ones, and few huge ones.
Rather than mapr going public, they should merge with cloudera..
Lolol
Mapr is no different from cloudera or hortonworks..just see how much they (cloudera and hortonworks)struggling to make money and profits..
MapR is significantly different from cloudera/horton. Like apples and oranges different. Google it.
I agree.
Give me a use case that MapR fits /solves that I can’t do with the more popular “similar “ vendors Cloudera/Databricks/big 3 cloud vendors
MapR is Hadoop written in c++. It’s supposedly more performant and is more geared to large corporations. I’ve used it and it’s shit
Cloudera is just a Hadoop vendor. Mapr offers a lot more, like dB, streams, and file system all on one cluster. That makes management easier and reduces data movement, which makes apps and analytics run faster. Mapr file system is posix too, so you can install anything you want (eg tensorflow) and still benefit from distributed high availability. Mapr also works with docker and kubernetes. You can only compare cloudera and MapR in terms of Hadoop. MapR’s Hadoop is faster, has no namenode bottleneck, supports POSIX file ops, scales far easier... I could go on, but really, just google it.
Thanks for the info. I see the mapr superiority comparing to cloudera..
True. From a product stand point, there really is no comparison. Even the most skeptical employees at MapR agree with that. It's the business side which needs to get better.
MapR CTO was an ass, good thing he left.
The entire MapR sales and marketing departments were let go last Friday. No notice. No explanation. No severance. A surprise to everyone.

Do you think mapr will be another cloudera and hortonworks ? Cloudera is struggling with stock with high customer base, hope that’s not the case with mapr once they go public...
It's hard to say.. it's partly true that MapR is struggling. But, it's also true that employees are proud of the product. Gaining Enterprise customers is hard, but the good thing is that we have very low churn. I know many customers who have 1000s of nodes of MapR software and have critical workloads running. I am not very confident about the stock value - I don't think it will be very diff from Cloudera in the short term, as it's taking time to grow revenues. But again, I hope that our product will help us differentiate and make us successful.
Cannot think of any sane company would pay for a startup with no founding engineer. Clueless Engineering executive all came from the same company and drove lots of senior engineering out. Sad!
