Masters in CS or Udemy/edx/coursera nano degrees?

Post is for spouse. She is a Biotech major (india) and is working in US as a BA entry level. She has about 2 yrs of xp @ Infosys back home and has started her career in Healthcare IT (McKesson) Do you guys recommend that she goes for a Masters in CS ? This would involve few months of pre-reqs and 2 year part time degree while working. Would this help her land a 80-90k+ job? Midwest (MI) Or is it better she takes these nano degrees / online platform mooc type degres from reputed websites and go into a specific field, that way? Visa is not a problem since she has an EAD for now and can get a TN in a couple years. She is looking into Data Science/Data analytics, Cloud computing and DevOps as potential options to streamline into.. Thanks for your input!

no don’t listen to above comments. bootcamp may not always work. If you want a career go through a degree. The formal training is much more rigorous than online bootcamp stuffs. It opens way more doors than you can imagine. Don’t just focus on the initial 100kish salary. With a degree you can jump in so many exciting opportunities.

Thanks for the advice. She is leaning towards this option..especially since she doesn’t have a bachelors in CS, comes from a completely different biology background and wants to work in the tech industry..

Bootcamp is a much cheaper way of determining if she is going to like the industry. Don’t spend a shitload of time/money/lost opportunity before knowing.

Before even bootcamping, it might be worth trying to make a personal project of some type to see if she enjoys it. Like for data analytics, play around with a kaggle dataset or something.

Take a look at Georgia Tech's online program. I'm currently a student and fully recommended it. My undergrad is in Industrial Engineering -- it's challenging, but if you're proactive about engaging with classmates/TAs in your courses it is very feasible.

Thanks - will check it out. Did you have to take a few pre reqs before you started the masters?

Medtronic atzQ15 Apr 17, 2018

Nope. They just require you to have an undergraduate degree and give preference to those that majored in a STEM field. The website provides more details on all the requirements.

Mckesson will pay for people’s university courses if it is work appropriate. She should discuss with her manager if the courses she is interested in count. If she’s working as a BA, computer science degree would probably be paid for and the knowledge she’s doing that and improving her skills could benefit her at work.

Did McKesson offer any RSU/stocks to employee ?
